We’ve already got some major shakeups but Mater Dei stays at No. 1 due to win on Tuesday by league rival Santa Margarita over a Marymount of Los Angeles squad that probably would have been a new No. 1 had it won. One of the Eagles’ early losses was to the Monarchs at a tournament in Hawaii. St. Ignatius of San Francisco also comes up big after winning Spikefest tourney against a field that included defending CIF Owpen Division champ Archbishop Mitty.

(Previous rank in parentheses)
(After matches of Tuesday, Aug. 29)
(No results from the Queens Court preseason tournament were listed on any of the schools’ MaxPreps pages so we didn’t count them in these rankings. Vista Murrieta won the Elite Division.)

1. (1) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 7-2
The Monarchs’ two losses at the Ann Kang Invitational in Hawaii were to Iolani (Honolulu) and Oak Ridge (Conroe, Texas). Both of those teams are higher than Mater Dei in national rankings so the Monarchs can stay No. 1 in the state.

2. (NR) Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 3-1
A team that made a lot of noise in last year’s CIFSS Division I playoffs, the Jackrabbits notched a win over preseason No. 2 Santa Margarita in Hawaii and dropped their only match there to championship team Iolani.

3. (NR) St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 5-0
Expected graduation losses have seemingly been overcome easily by head coach David Huan and the Wildcats, who won the Spikefest tourney title last weekend after beating St. Francis (Mountain View) and Sacred Heart Cathedral (SF) in the semis and finals. Previous state No. 3 Archbishop Mitty also was win the field. All-tourney honors went to Rhea Inumerable, Sierra Tyson and Megan Lucey.

4. (2) Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 7-3
The Eagles’ losses are to LB Poly, Punahou of Hawaii (now ranked nationally) and Mater Dei. In their big win on Tuesday against Marymount, Cal-bound Devon Chang had 53 assists while Sarah Ciszek had 15 kills.

5. (4) Marymount (Los Angeles) 1-1
Scores of the match with Santa Margarita (keep in mind the Sailors were on the road deep in Orange County) show it was one that could have gone either way: 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11. Marymount came into that match as the No. 1 team in the nation according to MaxPreps but now have to go behind the Eagles.

6. (3) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 4-1
No, the Monarchs didn’t lose to St. Ignatius at the Spikefest, but they did drop one to Carlmont of Belmont and then SI ended up winning the title. Look for the Monarchs to move back up regardless of the early loss if they beat Mater Dei at Mater Dei on Friday.

7. (5) Redondo Union (Redondo Beach) 1-0
In this week’s Flo50 national rankings, the Seahawks didn’t drop despite only having one reported result on their log. They had to for the state, however, to make room for Long Beach Poly and St. Ignatius.

8. (6) Lakewood 3-0
Head coach Mike Wadley’s girls were shown with three wins to get started at their own Tae Kim Molten Classic. The title match was scheduled for Wednesday of this week where the Lancers were looking at the possibility of playing Huntington Beach.

9. (7) Torrey Pines (San Diego) 1-0
In what was called the battle for Del Mar Heights, the Falcons opened their season on Tuesday with a win that went to five games over defending CIF D2 state champion Cathedral Catholic of San Diego. Let’s just say most of the other national rankings had CC ranked higher so we were glad to see Torrey Pines win.

10. (NR) Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) 4-1
The Irish also already seem to be fine after having a senior-oriented group last season. They beat Carlmont (Belmont) at the Spikefest after Carlmont got a win vs. Mitty and reached the title match.

11. (19) Huntington Beach 3-0
With league rival Edison having to drop due to a loss to Trabuco Hills, the Oilers go back up. They were in the championship round of the Molten Classic and on track to play Lakewood in the final. Huntington also has a scheduled match coming up next week against Mater Dei.

12. (12) La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 1-0
Katie Lougeay racked up 15 kills while Oregon-bound Morgan Lewis had 12 in a 3-1 win to open the season on Tuesday against La Jolla High.

13. (9) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 0-0
There are still a number of 0-0 teams according to reported results and the Wildcats are the highest ranked among them. They had to drop some spots because of other teams simply having to move up, including Long Beach Poly and St. Ignatius.

14. (13) Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) 0-0
We’ll still leave in the Mustangs with no reported results. There were some scores in one writeup we saw about the Queens Court preseason tourney, but no teams in that writeup included those scores on any of their team pages that we saw.

15. (15) Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 0-0
Head coach Steve Astor’s squad is shown with a match later this week against Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo, which won earlier this week against Edison of Huntington Beach (last year’s CIF D1 state champion).

16. (16) Canyon Crest Academy (San Diego) 0-0
Also no results showing yet for the Ravens. Their upcoming early schedule, though, includes matchups against three state-ranked teams — Cathedral Catholic, Corona del Mar and Archbishop Mitty.

17. (17) Turlock 0-0
Earlier this week, the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section staged its annual Foundation Games for girls volleyball, which raises funds for several programs. The results don’t count, but the Bulldogs played St. Mary’s of Stockton in one of those games and won.

18. (18) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 0-1
The Dons will try to bounce back from close loss in five games from Tuesday night of this week to Torrey Pines. They are playing Canyon Crest Academy on Thursday.

19. (NR) Carlmont (Belmont) 4-1
We just had to stick the Scots in there this week to give them credit for notching a win against Archbishop Mitty at the Spikefest tourney. Carlmont’s loss in the event was to Sacred Heart Cathedral.

20. (20) Liberty (Bakersfield) 0-0
The CIF Central Section No. 1 team has a scheduled matchup with No. 2 Buchanan (Clovis) on Thursday, but late Wednesday afternoon the Kern High School District canceled all athletic events for the day due to extreme heat.
