Preseason FB: All-L.A. City Section

This is the cover illustration from the seventh edition of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book.

Once again Narbonne of Harbor City is the preseason team to beat in the L.A. City Section and it will be an upset if any other program captures the section’s first open division title. The section has ebbs and flows with regards to the strength of its teams, but there is always an abundance of individual talent and this season is no exception. Narbonne and contender L.A. Dorsey lead the way with four selection each, while L.A. Westchester, Carson, Banning of Wilmington, L.A. Crenshaw and Sylmar are among the programs with multiple selections.

Note: These preseason all-section teams will be done in the same 30-player format as the annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football Teams. They are based on a combination of what the players did last season and college recruiting. Not every all-section team will have writeups of every player. Some will have an intro, then lists.

OFFENSE

WR — Kalen Simmons (Westchester, Los Angeles) 6-0, 175, Sr.
We go with a bit of a sleeper pick here, as we expect Simmons to have a breakout year as he replaces graduated Desmond Johnson as all-City QB Jonathan Murphy’s favorite target. One of the most versatile athletes in the city, Simmons is excellent in the return game, racked up 44 tackles as a DB and averaged 21.2 ypc on 31 receptions.
