State Stat Stars of the Week

We’ll have more details and comments about LaMelo Ball’s 92 points for Chino Hills later in the week after that team has played its final regular season game, but there’s others doing some great things as well. Jules Bernard of Windward had a 45-point game last week while Covina’s Allison Ayala is now coming up the charts for most 3-pointers in a season. We also are remembering former all-state player Shawntinice Polk of Hanford, who just got surpassed as that school’s all-time leading scorer by senior Janelle Sumilong.

We also will compile single-game highs from this post throughout the season and of course we use our weekly State Stat Stars collection as an aid for the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book. BOYS BASKETBALL

Braelee Albert (Brentwood, Los Angeles)
A 6-foot-5 sophomore, he scored 35 points during a 90-55 win over Campbell Hall of North Hollywood in a Gold Coast League contest.

Tim Andreolli (Royal, Simi Valley)
The Highlanders defeated crosstown rival Simi Valley 68-56 last week and primarily have Andreolli to thank for it as he scored a game-high 31 points.

Marvin Bagley (Sierra Canyon, Chatsworth)
A 98-72 win by the state No. 1 Trailblazers in last Saturday’s Nike Extravaganza over Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas was in the bag when big Marvin started dominating. The 6-foot-10 junior wound up with 43 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks and broke the event’s single-game record of 41 points set a few years ago by current NBA player Shabazz Muhammad when he was playing for Bishop Gorman.

Jules Bernard (Windward, Los Angeles)
The Wildcats picked up their 20th win of the season with a 59-44 win over Paraclete of Lancaster as he had a big double-double with 27 points and 19 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Bernard had a career-high 45 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Campbell Hall. The junior wing is getting recruiting interest from USC and UCLA.

Joey Calcaterra (Marin Catholic, Kentfield)
Now averaging 30 points per game this season, he scored 37 points during a 87-83 win over Tamalpais of Mill Valley. He also ended two rebounds shy of a triple-double as he also had 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Devin Cole (Buena, Ventura)
You can certainly say that the Buena guard had a bueno night as he scored 30 points during a 73-57 win over St. Bonaventure of Ventura.

Devante Doutrive (Birmingham, Lake Balboa)
The Patriots, ranked No. 6 in the state, clinched at least a tie for the West Valley League championship with a 116-81 win over Taft of Woodland Hills and Devante led the way with 34 points. Younger brother Devonaire Doutrive, a junior, added 26 points in the victory.

Jaylen Hands (Foothills Christian, El Cajon)
He had back-to-back 34-point games last week, doing it during a 83-54 win over Horizon Christian Academy of San Diego and in a 86-59 loss to national power Oak Hill Academy of Virginia.

Milton Jordan (Franklin, Stockton)
In helping the Yellowjackets hand Chavez of Stockton its first loss in San Joaquin Athletic Association action, Jordan netted 30 points in a 69-63 triumph. The 5-foot-11 senior guard also hit for 30 points on the nose in his other outing last week when Franklin defeated Bear Creek of Stockton 79-60.

Damari Milstead (Moreau Catholic, Hayward)
Making sure the Mariners would not lose for a second time to James Logan of Union City this season, the senior guard scored 32 points during a 69-56 win over the Colts.

Kezie Okpala (Esperanza, Anaheim)
For the second time in a two-week span, Okpala scored 45 points in a game with the most recent being in a 67-51 victory vs. Foothill of Tustin. Okpala also grabbed 10 rebounds during the game.

Levontay Ott (Hesperia)
We don’t often get stat star worthy outings in 45-43 contest, but did from Ott in Hesperia’s 45-43 triumph against Oak Hills of Hesperia. Ott came through with 24 points and 24 rebounds as the Scorpions came back from a 16-point deficit and stayed in first-place in the Mojave River League.

Sauny Poun (Huntington Park)
With the game against South East of South Gate coming down to the final minute, Poun helped the Spartans to a 71-67 triumph and finished with 36 points. The 5-foot-11 senior guard has been a bright spot for a team that won for only the seventh time this season.

Cameron Shelton (Damien, La Verne)
Leading the way on offense for the Spartans, he scored 31 points during a 102-72 win over Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga. Damien, ranked No. 13 in the state, also improved to 23-3 on the season.

Ryan Turrell (Valley Torah, Valley Village)
While it may not be for a big school, Ryan still had a big performance during a 96-65 win over Lakeview Charter as he scored 43 points during their 19th win of the season. Teammate Max Leibowitz also had a big night as he scored 36 points.

Cashemin Williams (Central, Fresno)
The junior standout started the week by scoring 27 points in leading his team past visiting Buchanan of Clovis 72-60. In the second game of the week, Cashemin matched a season high by scoring 30 points against host Clovis West, as the Grizzlies won in a nail-biter 66-64 and took over first place in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Celeste Almendarez (Edison, Stockton)
It was not one but two triple-doubles last week for the Vikings’ 5-foot-7 junior point guard, who has led them to the verge of the San Joaquin Athletic Association league title. In a 69-36 victory vs. McNair of Stockton, Almendarez went for 35 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals. Then later in the week when Edison downed Chavez of Stockton 77-36, she triple-doubled with 22 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists. She had an ever rarer quadruple-double earlier this season against Stagg.

Allison Ayala (Covina)
We’ve been focusing a lot on the career 3-point totals for La Jolla Bishop’s Alessandra Aguirre, but Ayala is moving up the charts for single season. She made 10 3-pointers in two games last week that brought up her season total to 131. She is closing in on the all-time CIF Southern Section record of 142 set in 2013 by Courtney Jaco of Los Angeles Windward.

Christina Buksa (Foothills Christian, El Cajon)
She just missed out on her third double-double of the season during a 68-19 win over Del Lago Academy of Escondido as she scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Earlier in the week, this 5-foot-5 senior had 35 points during a 53-51 win over Classical Academy of Escondido.

Alyssa Burton (Madera)
It was more than just a huge double-double during the week when Burton hauled in 25 rebounds to go along with 25 points in a 50-33 win over Sanger. In her previous game, Burton also scored her 1,000th career point.

Chelsey Gipson (Palisades, Pacific Palisades)
While the Dolphins lost the game, the leading all-state candidate had an impressive performance during a 81-69 loss to Mater Dei of Santa Ana as she scored 37 points.

Hannah Jump (Pinewood, Los Altos Hills)
Showing off her jump shot, she made 10 of her 15 shots from the floor and finished with 27 points during an 81-49 win over Menlo School of Atherton. Jump was named to last year’s All-State freshman team and also has played with U16 national team representing Great Britain.

Shyla Latone (Bonita Vista, Chula Vista)
Another week and another writeup for LaTone as she scored as many points (49) as Montgomery of San Diego did as a team during a 73-49 triumph by the Barons over the Aztecs.

Abria Laue (Grace Brethren, Simi Valley)
The Lancers defeated Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara 72-46 with this freshman point guard scoring 30 points. Two weeks ago, she had a season-high 40 points during a 71-53 win over Villanova Prep of Ojai.

Destiny Littleton (Bishop’s, La Jolla)
For many, a 35-point game might be a career-best but for LIttleton this season it’s a quiet night. She scored 35 points during a 75-41 win over Lincoln of San Diego. Earlier in the week, she did have 45 points during a 72-59 win over Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach and earlier this week she had 61 points when the Knights defeated Horizon Christian Academy of San Diego 92-60.

Camille Parker (Alta Loma)
A recent SoCal Player of the Week, Parker posted her second quadruple-double of the season with 18 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals to lead her team past Don Lugo of Chino 69-27. Parker has been a four-year standout for the Braves.

Kimora Pooler (Pacifica, Oxnard)
Although Leuzinger of Lawndale got the 65-54 victory, the Olympians had a rough time in trying to stop Pooler. She had one of her best games at Pacifica with 25 points, 23 rebounds and six steals.

Tayah Ranney (Central Valley, Shasta Lake)
The Falcons have had a tough time this season getting wins but their senior captain continues to do all that she can, including the 37-point night that she had last week in a 70-61 loss to Yreka.

Makaila Sanders (Foothill, Sacramento)
The Mustangs got 38 points, 20 rebounds and eight assists from their junior captain during a 77-38 win over Lincoln. She is averaging 24.3 points per game.

Janelle Sumilong (Hanford)
The back-bone of the Bullpups all season long has become the school’s all-time point leader, according to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett. Sumilong has passed the “Great One,” the late Shawntinice Polk, who scored 2,163 points. Janelle scored a game high of 35 points and had 12 rebounds and 10 assists in an 81-42 win over El Diamante of Visalia and 25 points with 10 rebounds in a 68-25 win over Hanford West. Sumilong now has 2,165 career points.

Kameron Taylor (Bakersfield Christian)
It was a busy week for Taylor, who began by scoring 30 points, making 19-of-21 free-throws and collecting eight rebounds in a 46-42 win over Taft. In the 2nd game of the week, she scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds and six assists against Kennedy of Delano, but the Eagles lost 52-49. Kameron finished off the week with 26 points, 11 steals and eight rebounds in a loss to Arvin. In that last game, she also made 21-of-22 free-throws, tied for third most in Central Section history.

Haley Van Dyke (Campolindo, Moraga)
Getting the chance to avenge an earlier loss to defending CIF NorCal Open Division champ Miramonte of Orinda, Van Dyke had 19 points, 17 rebounds and five steals as the Cougars defeated the Matadors 49-44.

Nay Nay Watkins (Arroyo Valley, Simi Valley)
The Hawks are currently 24-2 on the year and their junior captain is a big reason why. Watkins actually had three quadruple-doubles last week with her best performance coming during a 98-34 win over Rim of the World of Lake Arrowhead with 33 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 13 steals.
