(After games of Saturday, Nov. 12)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)

1. (1) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 11-0
Monarchs posted their fourth shutout of the season and their highest single-game scoring total with 69-0 win vs. Tesoro in first CIFSS D1 playoff game.

2. (2) Centennial (Corona) 10-1
Tanner McKee threw for four TDs and ran for two in 55-24 triumph over JSerra that advanced Huskies to CIFSS D1 quarterfinal opposite Chaminade of West Hills.

3. (3) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 9-2
After the Braves got past Upland 47-20 in CIFSS D1 playoffs, they will now meet league rival Santa Margarita in quarterfinals. The Eagles ousted previous No. 9 Gardena Serra 27-13.

4. (4) Mission Viejo 11-0
The Matthew McDonald-Austin Osborne combo was clicking well and Colin Schooler had almost 200 yards rushing in 49-28 victory over Servite fo Anaheim.

5. (5) Rancho Cucamonga 11-0
Cougars’ defensive secondary made plays all night long in 27-7 win vs. Orange Lutheran in CIFSS D1 playoffs. They’ll now play No. 4 Mission Viejo in quarterfinal showdown.

6. (6) Narbonne (Harbor City) 11-0
The defense racked up four TDs of its own to go with explosive offense as Gauchos blasted Arleta 85-7 in CIF L.A. City D1 playoffs.

7. (7) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 10-0
There were no CIF San Diego Section Open Division games last week (due to it being an eight-team bracket) so the Dons had a bye.

8. (8) De La Salle (Concord) 9-1
In every one of the Spartans’ 24 straight NCS title seasons, the quest has begun with a blowout. This year, it’ll begin with an expected close game against 9-1 Clayton Valley of Concord.

9. (10) Freedom (Oakley) 10-0
It’s always tough to beat a great team twice, something the Falcons hope they don’t learn about when then play 9-1 Pittsburg in NCS Open Division.

10. (11) Murrieta Valley (Murrieta) 9-2
Owning a win over Oaks Christian doesn’t mean as much for the Nighthawks as it did last week. Having one over Vista Murrieta, on the other hand, means more.

You’re kidding, right? De La Salle against Clayton Valley will be close?

Don’t undersell the Eagles. I doubt very much that Dela will have their way with them this year.
I think they have one of the 3 biggest and strongest lines on both sides of the LOS of any team north of the Chowchilla, or even the Tehachapis. They have a very fast closing secondary, 3 HB/TB s they rotate in and out(2 of them are super quick and fast, the other one is very big with decent speed) . Their kicker is very effective up to 40 yards and has a range close to 50. He usually puts it in the EZ on kick offs. And, they suit up about 8o guys. Their passing game (or lack of) is the Uglies’ weak point. Coach Tim Murphy, though, is one of the smartest around and seems to come up with running stuff out their modified single wing offense for every game that nobody has been able to effectively prepare for this year. (I doubt if Coach Murphy calls it that, since he’s too young to rememember Red Saunders’ UCLA teams of the 50’s. The Eagle’s don’t “snake” out of the huddle though.) Yeah, CVC got shut out 0-13 by Helix Sept. 3 at Mission Viejo HS, but I heard from some “inside” sources that the Ugly Eagles’ trip down to the Southland had some problems not related to the game of football itself. And remember, CVC knocked off E.C. Reed of Sparks, NV, the current #4 ranked team in Nevada 35-21 August 26. Later, Sept. 9, the Uglies clobbered Canyon Springs 35-7, one of the better programs around Las Vegas. On Sept. 23 at Deer Valley they beat the Wolverines by more than anyone else this year, 47-0.

I would be surprised (but not that much) if CVC were to get past the Spartans. However, a real lopsided DLS win (more than 25 points) would be a surprise too; AND I would then think that Dela could play with anyone in the state including the “big 4”, who at this time, seem to be way ahead of every other team in the southland as well as the rest of California.
