We have our first significant upset of the playoffs and no surprise it comes in the CIF Southern Section Division I bracket where San Juan Hills is ousted in Tuesday’s first round by Great Oak of Temecula. Since Tuesday results count in our state rankings, that causes some changes this week, including Ramona of the San Diego Section going in as only newcomer.

(Through games of Tuesday, Nov. 1)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)
1. (1) Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 28-4
The Eagles are the top seed in the CIF Southern Section Division I bracket and had first-round bye.
2. (3) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 31-5
Although the Monarchs were the No. 2 seed in the CIFSS D1 playoffs, they had to play on Tuesday in a first-round match. Still, they had no problems against Woodbridge of Irvine.
3. (3) Marymount (Los Angeles) 31-4
Like No. 1 seed Santa Margarita, the No. 5 seed Sailors also had a first-round bye in the CIFSS D1 playoffs. We won’t change the rankings to reflect the seeds because the top teams will be playing each other regardless.
4. (4) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 31-4
After defeating No. 12 St. Ignatius to win the West Catholic Athletic League playoff crown, the Monarchs, as expected, were awarded the top seed in the CIF Central Section Open Division. Their first game is Saturday vs. Menlo School.
5. (5) Edison (Huntington Beach) 30-7
Coach Matt Skolnik’s squad defeated Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo in first-round CIFSS D1 playoffs.
6. (6) Huntington Beach 28-3
The official record being reported for the Oilers is now 28-3 and they’re seeded fourth in the CIFSS D1 bracket.
7. (7) Lakewood 29-4
Trabuco and Tesoro kind of run together, but for the Lancers it was Tesoro of Las Flores that they dispatched in Tuesday’s CIFSS D1 playoffs.
8. (8) Ventura 30-2
Still riding high after winning the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, the Cougars had a bye in the first-round of the CIFSS Division II playoffs.

9. (9) Torrey Pines (San Diego) 26-4
This is the No. 1 seeded team from the CIF San Diego Section Division I bracket. Since the last rankings, the Falcons also posted a win over state-ranked La Costa Canyon.
10. (11) Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) 28-8
This is the spot where previous No. 10 San Juan Hills was sitting one week ago. The Mustangs move up as the No. 3 seed in the CIFSS D1 playoffs. San Juan Hills was upset by Great Oak of Temecula in an epic first-round match. The Wolf Pack prevailed 20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 31-29 and 16-14.
11. (12) St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 28-7
The Wildcats topped St. Francis of Mountain View in the WCAL semifinals before losing to Mitty in the final. If they play Mitty in the CCS Open Division playoffs, it also would be in the final. Those are the top two seeds.
12. (13) Sacred Heart Cathedral (SF) 26-7
Although the Irish lost last week, it was to No. 4 Mitty in the WCAL semifinals. They also are in the CCS Open Division playoffs and if they get to the semifinals in that bracket probably will have assured themselves of being in the NorCal Open Division.
13. (14) Menlo-Atherton (Atherton) 25-4
The Bears also move up one spot this week due to previous No. 10 San Juan Hills getting upset on Tuesday night in the CIFSS D1 playoffs. Like Mitty, St. Ignatius and Sacred Heart Cathedral, they also will be in the CCS Open Division.
14. (15) Notre Dame (Belmont) 31-9
Whether the Tigers were still in the WCAL or not, they still would have been in the CCS Open Division. They are going as West Bay League champion. If they were still in WCAL, it’s fairly certain they would have been in the top four and therefore headed to the Open Division.
15. (17) Temecula Valley (Temecula) 24-4
Since the Bears were the league champion of the same league as Great Oak (team that beat San Juan Hills Tuesday), they’re getting a bump in this week’s rankings. Temecula Valley had a bye in the first-round of the CIFSS D2 playoffs.
16. (16) Christian Brothers (Sacramento) 24-5
Bethel of Vallejo was no match for the Falcons in Tuesday’s first-round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.
17. (18) Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 33-7
The Trojans move up one spot this week and have already won one match in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs. Bubble team Tracy is the second seed.
18. (19) La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 21-9
The Mavericks still get to come up in this week’s rankings even though they lost last week because that loss was to higher-ranked Torrey Pines. It’s hard to see why they weren’t seeded second in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division, but at least as a No. 3 they wouldn’t have to play Torrey Pines again until the final.
19. (20) Canyon Crest Academy (San Diego) 18-9
The Ravens have a head-to-head win over Ramona, which is the No. 2 seed in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division. Their most recent losses within the section also are to Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon.
20. (NR) Ramona 28-6
This is the No. 2 seeded team in the San Diego Open Division. The bracket also includes another team, Santa Fe Christian, that has been in the State Top 20 this season. We don’t see the No. 2 seed, but will bring in the Bulldogs as the third San Diego team in a row to round out the order of this week’s rankings.
Dropped Out:
Previous No. 10 San Juan Hills (SJ Capistrano).
