Elk Grove bounces back from upset loss to Davis by beating previous No. 2 Grant 24-17. With Davis losing to Jesuit, it’s now reached that point in the season when teams can be ranked ahead of a team it has lost to. The Thundering Herd therefore get jumped back up into the top 10. Roseville, Lincoln of Stockton and Sierra of Manteca also go in as newcomers.

Jayden Machado threw three TD passes for Elk Grove, including two to Gavin Reinwald and another on a huge fourth down play in the fourth quarter to Jonas McMillan. Previously unbeaten Grant, which also was knocking on the door of the State Top 25, came into the night after a 56-0 win over Franklin of Elk Grove but couldn’t get going against Elk Grove’s defense. One of the Pacers’ TDs came on a 75-yard fumble return by Lawrence Hardy.
Grant fell to a spot in this week’s section rankings behind Elk Grove. One team the Pacers are now behind is Rocklin, which they beat by one point earlier this season. Rocklin, which also has quality wins over Napa, Whitney of Rocklin and Clovis West of Fresno, still had to fall behind Sacramento, Folsom and Jesuit due to Grant’s loss. The Thunder also will be tested in upcoming weeks, beginning this week vs. Oak Ridge.
This week’s top game obviously will be No. 4 Folsom traveling to play No. 1 Del Oro. A Folsom win would vault the Bulldogs ahead of the Golden Eagles and also probably even in front of Sacramento despite the recent upset loss.
The Del Oro-Folsom game also has playoff implications because Del Oro is a D2 team in the section playoffs, but would move to D1 if it were to win the Sierra Foothill League title. St. Mary’s of Stockton also is a D2 team, but there’s not much suspense whether it will win its league and then move up to D1.
