FB: Top 10 Rankings Update

SJS teams St. Mary’s of Stockton and Del Oro of Loomis both join the Top 10. Previous No. 9 Oaks Christian didn’t actually fall far, but that will be revealed in new State Top 25.

NOTE: Our updated State Top 25 with list of many other teams on the bubble will be posted each week but will require Gold Club membership to see. Our breakdowns and analysis of what’s coming up and what’s already happened can’t be matched anywhere else because we’ve been following the statewide scene years and years longer than any other media source. (After games of Saturday, Sept. 3)
(Previous ranking in parentheses)

1. (1) De La Salle (Concord) 2-0
Serra of San Mateo was still a top 10 Bay Area team by most coming into last Friday’s game vs. the Spartans. Final score: 47-13. It was 32-7 at halftime. For the 800 billionth time: starters graduate, coaches do not.

2. (3) St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 2-0
We’ve flip-flopped the Braves and Corona Centennial after two straight 34-0 shutout wins and pending game this week against consensus national No. 1 Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas.

3. (2) Centennial (Corona) 1-1
The Huskies probably wouldn’t have dropped at all if Bosco wasn’t playing Bishop Gorman next and probably will go back in front if Gorman wins. Their own 50-49 loss to IMG of Florida (another team near top of national polls) proved they can play and beat anybody.

4. (4) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 2-0
The national pollsters will be in a real bind if Bosco does beat Gorman this week because if they then don’t put the Braves in front of Mater Dei they’ll look pretty stupid. Now you see why we have been waiting for the Monarchs’ schedule to get tougher before ranking them higher.

5. (5) Mission Viejo 2-0
Oak Hills of Hesperia played the Diablos tough in the first half of last Friday’s Honor Bowl game, but two quick TDs produced a 35-21 halftime lead in eventual 42-28 win.

6. (7) Narbonne (Harbor City) 2-0
A dominant second half enabled the Gauchos to beat previous No. 16 Long Beach Poly 25-13 to go with season-opening victory vs. state-ranked Gardena Serra.

7. (6) Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 2-0
The Broncos’ had to drop a spot behind Narbonne after 31-0 win vs. Redondo, which was more of a reward to Narbonne than a reaction to anything negative they did.

8. (8) Folsom 2-0
The Bulldogs didn’t throw it all over the yard like they did in their opener, but still beat Jesuit of Carmichael 42-28 for their 47th straight regular season win.

9. (11) St. Mary’s (Stockton) 2-0
After scoring 63 in first game vs. Serra (San Mateo), the Rams hit 49 in 49-32 win vs. Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa).

10. (12) Del Oro (Loomis) 2-0
The Golden Eagles move right on up behind St. Mary’s after 29-9 win vs. Pleasant Valley (Chico) and have a tough test this week vs. defending CIF NorCal D1-AA champ Bellarmine of San Jose.
