Two upcoming sophomores from the East Bay and an athlete trying to make a point about soccer were among those who came, tested and stood out at the fourth annual Elite Training Academy All-Star Sports Combine last Saturday in Tracy. Go inside for honorees from the two high school age groups.

A.J. Schabbing was noticeably quick as a freshman when he ran the 40 during last year’s Elite Training Academy All-Star Sports Combine.

The Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland sophomore came back to the event last weekend at Tracy’s Wayne Schneider Stadium and was the top overall performer among two different “waves” of high school athletes who took part in the event.

Using the Parisi Speed School scoring system with the 20-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, vertical leap, five-hop standing broad jump and chin ups, Schabbing put up 619 points. It was the only score above 600 points during the day.

This year’s ETA combine was set up so that athletes from as young as first grade could report at varying times throughout the day. Although organizers said there were perhaps 50 or more participants who couldn’t come due to this year’s event having to have been postponed from January due to a wet field, they liked focusing their testing on different groups at a time rather than flowing everyone through the system at once.

Schabbing came to the morning session with others from the high school age group. Finishing in second-place was Vincent Thompson with 580 points while in third was junior-to-be running back Logan Ramos-Cortes from St. Mary’s of Stockton.

It wasn’t possible for Cal-Hi Sports to attend the morning session, but we were there for the afternoon workout. In that group, sophomore running back David Summers from Valley Christian of Dublin shined with a total of 598 points. Senior soccer player Kyle Adafan from Kimball of Tracy was second, just edging very promising freshman wide receiver Mason Sarsfield of Tracy, 572 to 571.

Schabbing’s top testing marks included a 32.5-inch vertical jump and a 4.25 in the shuttle. Summers had a 31.5-inch vertical jump and a 4.26 shuttle.

“I came out here to see what I can do,” Summers said. “I was very happy with the vertical because I don’t do that at every one of these events. My goal is to try to go to The Opening.”

Adafan was happy because he wanted to “show that soccer people can do competing with football people.”

The Kimball senior says he does plan to compete for the track team this spring, but is looking to use his speed on the pitch at the next level.

“Soccer is more continuous with its running, but speed and quickness and jumping does happen, too,” he said. “This was a fun time.”

Others who had top testing marks during the day included Xavier Moore with 33.5 inches in the vertical jump, Daeshawn Gaines with a 2.52 in the 20-yard run, Mason Sarsfield with a 47.4-foot five-hop broad jump and Brandon Arreola from Sierra of Manteca with 33 chin ups.

“My goal is to get exposure for these kids and give them a professional event,” said David Luera, Co-Founder and Executive Director of ETA Sports Academies. “Then maybe if they do go to one of the bigger combines coming here first will help get some of the jitters out of their system.”

One athlete who stopped by the event that was a standout at last year’s ETA combine was West of Tracy running back Marcel Dancy. He was one of the top running backs in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section last spring and has credited the ETA program for some of the rapid improvement he enjoyed in between his junior and senior seasons.
