One of the top players of the 2015 season in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section was running back/defensive back Marcel Dancy from West of Tracy. He rushed for 1,914 yards, added 386 receiving yards and 591 return yards. In addition, he scored 30 touchdowns and had 94 tackles with five interceptions on defense.
It wasn’t too much of a surprise what Dancy did, however, if you had seen him work out at last year’s Elite Training Academy Sports Combine. The junior at the time displayed explosiveness in all drills and continued to get better later in the spring and summer.
This year’s Elite Training Academy Sports Combine will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Wayne Schneider Stadium in Tracy. The event is unique in that it brings together athletes of all ages and features more events than the traditional high school football combine.
Events include 40-Yard Dash, 3-Cone, 20-Yard Shuttle, 5-Hop Broad Jump, Vertical Jump, 200-Yard Shuttle and Strength Test (Pull Ups).
“We changed from the standing broad jump to the 5-hop and added pull ups for strength,” explained David Luera, Co-CEO of the Elite Training Academy when asked if there were any changes from the previous combine. “We’re also going to stage the pull ups near seating areas so parents can cheer on their kids as they are doing them.”
The event begins with Wave No. 1 of those age 5 to age 9 at 8:30 a.m. The first group of high school athletes (age 15 and up) should start going through the circuit at 11:30 a.m. The second group of high school athletes is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
“We have modeled even more of it than ever before off of the Parise Speed program,” Luera said. “All of the NFL style combine events are laser-timed and it’s just a great way to see where everyone stacks up against their peers in competition before off-season training really picks up.”
One of the additional coaches on hand will be 2014 Kimball of Tracy graduate Gaige Allen, who was a true freshman standout last season at Azusa Pacific University. Other former and current NFL players may attend as schedule allows.
Two others from last year’s combine who turned in more than solid 2015 seasons were running back Mark Paule Jr. from Sierra of Manteca and quarterback-punter Anthony Craven of Linden.
