State Stat Stars of the Week

As more and more great players see their prep careers come to a close (example: Tulare’s Romello Harris, Gardena Serra’s Khalil Tate & Sylmar’s Clarence Williams), others may just be warming up for section titles and CIF state bowl games. QBs Jake Jeffrey of Folsom and Darreon Lockett of Pomona among those on that list while RBs Zikel Reddick of Grace Brethren and Jordan Antunez of Garden Grove had huge outings last week as well.

Note: We will collect totals from MaxPreps, newspapers, tweets and from those sent in to us. We also will compile single-game highs from this post throughout the season and of course we use our weekly State Stat Stars collection as an aid for the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book. That is the only state record book anyone has ever done and we have published it seven times with full copyright protection. Drake Aguon (University City, San Diego)
Passing for well over three times the century mark, he completed 22 of his 30 pass attempts for 357 yards and six touchdowns as the Centurions advanced in the CIF San Diego Section Division IV playoffs with a 56-20 win over Santana of Santee.

Jordan Antunez (Garden Grove)
He rushed for a school-record 376 yards and scored two touchdowns on 28 carries as the Argonauts advanced in the CIFSS Southern Division playoffs with a 24-19 win over Santa Ana Valley.

Elijah Bynum (Buena Park)
Almost averaging 10 yards per carry during a 35-17 win over Corona del Mar of Newport Beach, he finished with 193 yards and one touchdown when the Coyotes advanced in the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs.

Zach Chulak (Viewpoint, Calabasas)
While it wasn’t quite his season-high, this performance (unlike his 482-yard passing outing) came during a win as he completed 28 of his 43 pass attempts for 393 yards and five touchdowns during a 37-35 victory over Covina.

Steven Comstock (Northview, Covina)
This sophomore had his third straight honor roll effort, but this time his team fell short in a 62-55 CIFSS Mid-Valley Division playoff loss to Pomona. Comstock went 15 of 24 passing for 348 yards and three TDs and added 83 yards rushing and three TDs on 14 carries.

Patrick Conte & Kyle Giguiere (Scotts Valley)
These two helped the Falcons’ defense record six interceptions during a 28-14 win over Menlo School of Atherton in the CCS Division II playoffs. Conte intercepted one pass and returned it 100 yards for a score while Giguiere led the way with three interceptions.

Matt Corral (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village)
Despite it coming during a 61-40 loss to Bishop Amat of La Puente, we honored Michael Pittman Jr. of the Lions as one of our players of the week and it was this quarterback that kept looking his way as well. Corral completed 24 of his 42 pass attempts for 435 yards and four touchdowns in the final outing of a spectacular sophomore season.

Tayvian Cunningham (Wood, Vacaville)
He caught 10 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn’t enough to get his team the gold in their game against Del Oro of Loomis as they were on the losing end of a 59-49 final score in the SJS D2 playoffs. QB Marcus Howard also finished with 483 yards and four touchdowns passing but also had to many completions (seven) to the wrong team.

Jacob Fimbres (Sonora, La Habra)
This will be the final time this standout running back is listed here this season. Despite rushing for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries, the Raiders lost to San Clemente 52-45 in the CIFSS Southwest Division playoffs.

Tawan Funches (Chatsworth)
The TDs came in bunches for Funches in the Chancellors’ 54-7 romp past Cleveland of Reseda in the CIF L.A. City Section Division II playoffs. He scored six times and had 252 yards rushing on just 18 carries.

Dominic Garzoli (Orland)
Scoring all five of Orland’s touchdowns during a 35-7 win over West Valley of Cottonwood in the CIF Northern Section Division III playoffs, he finished with 328 yards on 17 carries. Orland (11-1) advanced to play Sutter in this week’s final.

Tristan Gebbia (Calabasas)
Last year’s all-state sophomore QB completed passes to nine different receivers and ended 24 of 42 for 348 yards and three TDs during the Coyotes’ 33-7 win vs. Lawndale in the CIFSS Western Division playoffs. Teammate Marquel Dismuke also had a kickoff return for a score.

Keaton Hampton & Jake Dunniway (St. Mary’s, Stockton)
These two juniors both shined as the Rams knocked off unbeaten Napa 28-14 in the SJS D1 quarterfinals. Hampton caught nine passes for 260 yards and four TDs. Dunniway’s TDs to Hampton were from 8, 19, 79 and 28 yards and he finished 16 of 22 for 339 yards. St. Mary’s has several other standout juniors – and a few sophs – and definitely is a team to watch for next season.

Romello Harris (Tulare)
He didn’t play in Tulare’s 46-14 loss to Sunnyside of Fresno in the Central Section D2 playoffs due to a knee injury, but we have to give him a final salute for his prep career. In three seasons, Harris ended with 7,311 career rushing yards, which will put him in third-place on the all-time section list, according to section historian Bob Barnett.

Jake Jeffrey (Folsom)
The Bulldogs’ latest QB standout passed for 435 yards and five touchdowns while also catching a touchdown pass in their 49-14 triumph against Franklin of Elk Grove in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinals.

Lucas Johnson (Mt. Carmel, San Diego)
In a San Diego Section D2 playoff matchup with Westview, Johnson dazzled by completing 22 of 33 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns. Teammate Rashid Shadeed was the top receiver with nine catches for 144 and one.

Quincy Jountti (Liberty, Bakersfield)
Jountti’s team is beginning to flex its muscles in the CIF Central Section D1 playoffs. With him churning out 211 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries, the Patriots defeated Central of Fresno 40-27 and advanced to this week’s semifinals vs. Bullard of Fresno.

Jordan Leonard (Brethren Christian, Huntington Beach)
He has now rushed for 2,515 yards and 37 touchdowns this season after he rushed for 203 yards and two scores during a 49-26 win over Rancho Christian in the CIFSS East Valley Division second round.

Darreon Lockett (Pomona)
After leading the Red Devils to last year’s CIFSS Mid-Valley Division crown, he’s possibly at it again. Lockett completed 15 of 27 passes for 300 yards and four TDs in last week’s 62-55 shootout win over Northview of Covina in the quarterfinals. He also had 14 carries for 121 yards and one score and he clinched the win with an interception on defense.

Perry Martin (Thousand Oaks)
Playing alongside Cal-bound QB Max Gilliam, Martin isn’t often the featured performer for the Lancers but he sure was in last week’s 34-31 victory over Lompoc in the CIFSS Northern Division playoffs. Martin scored his fourth TD of the game on a seven-yard run with 1:22 left and ended with 39 carries for 323 yards. Thousand Oaks plays Arroyo Grande next.

Sean McGrew (St. John Bosco, Bellflower)
He’s obviously well-tuned and ready to go for the stretch drive. In Bosco’s 52-14 romp past Loyola last week, the Mr. Football State POY candidate ripped off 238 yards on 22 carries, added 82 yards on receptions and scored twice.

Brennan Mornhinweg & Casey Mornhinweg (Stevenson, Pebble Beach)
Brennan had 17 tackles and rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries when the Pirates topped Marina 28-14 in the CCS playoffs. Casey went over 2,000 yards passing for the season by going 15 of 24 for 225 yards and three TDs. They are the nephews of long-time NFL coach Marty Mornhinweg so that means they are the grandsons of Larry Mornhinweg, who we count as the first subscriber to anything we ever published way back in the days when Marty was the QB at San Jose Oak Grove.

Jason Neiger (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach)
He was kicking for the Sea Kings when they went 16-0 two seasons ago and won the CIF Division III state bowl crown. Neiger was hoping his career would last longer, but it ended when CDM was eliminated by Buena Park in last week’s CIFSS Southwest Division quarterfinals. Neiger finished with state record book qualifying career totals in several categories, including kicking points (198) and PATs (138). His best outing of the year probably came against Beckman of Santa Ana when he went 7-for-7 on PATs, made a 38-yard field goal and recovered his own onside kick.

Zikel Reddick (Grace Brethren, Simi Valley)
Averaging 28 yards per carry during a 37-0 win over Desert of Edwards AFB, the standout player from one of the state’s top small school teams finished with 336 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries. Grace Brethren will play next against Brethren Christian of Huntington Beach in the CIFSS East Valley Division rankings.

Sean Riley (Narbonne, Harbor City)
The University of Arizona-bound running back sparked the Gauchos after they fell behind early in an eventual 55-24 victory against San Pedro in the CIF L.A. City Division I playoffs. In addition to getting 245 yards and four TDs on 18 carries, Riley also scored on a 90-yard kickoff return.

Ryan Robards (Elk Grove)
Before committing to play baseball down the street from our Stockton office at the University of the Pacific, he continued to make the most of his final season playing football as he carried the ball 28 times for 375 yards and scored five touchdowns during a 58-16 win over Merced. It is rather amazing that Robards (45 TDs and more than 2,500 yards) didn’t get more college attention in football, but he’s a big-time outfielder as well.

Owen Scott (Placer, Auburn)
Not only did he rush for 265 yards but he also returned a kickoff for a score and finished with four touchdowns during a 65-52 win over Patterson in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs. The unbeaten Hillmen play Central Catholic of Modesto in their next game.

Khalil Sproul (Mar Vista, Imperial Beach)
In a 49-24 victory by the Mariners over Southwest of El Centro in the San Diego Section D4 playoffs, the junior running back sizzled with 14 carries for 215 yards and found the end zone five times.

Torreahno Sweet (Bishop Amat, La Puente)
A week after setting the school record for rushing touchdowns in a season, he had another sweet performance against previously undefeated Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and set another school record. Differing totals after the game had him with 356 and 370 yards, but reportedly the school is going to go with 360 as its “official” total. Sweet did it on 33 carries and also scored three touchdowns.

Tim Tague (Miramonte, Orinda)
Not a stranger to having his name listed here, he completed 29 of his 45 pass attempts for 392 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions as the Matadors defeated Casa Grande of Petaluma 47-29 in the CIF NCS Division II playoffs.

Khalil Tate (Serra, Gardena)
In his final high school game, he rushed for 356 yards and two touchdowns while passing for 143 yards and one touchdown in a 28-27 loss to Mater Dei of Santa Ana. Committed to Arizona, he finished his senior season with 2,036 yards passing and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 2,130 yards and 26 touchdowns. If there’s ever been a lock for one of the six all-state first team multi-purpose positions, Tate definitely qualifies.

Cameron Taylor (Hillsdale, San Mateo)
After a slow start to the season against Saratoga (61 yards), this senior RB has been racking up the rushing yardage. He had a season-high 297 yards on 24 carries and scored twice in a 45-22 win last week over Aragon in the CCS playoffs. Taylor also went over 1,600 yards for the season and he’s still going.

Kevin Todd (Patterson)
Finishing his season with a big passing performance, he completed 29 of his 44 pass attempts for 440 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for two touchdowns during a 65-52 loss to Placer of Auburn in the SJS D3 playoffs. The Tigers finished 11-1.

Andrew Tovar & Jamire Calvin (Cathedral, Los Angeles)
These two helped the Phantoms edge Downey 22-20 in the CIFSS Southeast Division quarterfinals. Tovar hit on 25 of 37 passes for 312 yards and two TDs. Calvin caught one of the TD passes (37 yards) and he returned a punt 65 yards for a score.

Maurice Washington (The King’s Academy, Sunnyvale)
Despite scoring five touchdowns, he saw his season come to an end with a 50-47 loss to Carmel in the CCS D2 playoffs. In all, he caught seven passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and scored on an interception return.

Clarence Williams (Sylmar)
He wrapped up a sterling three-year career as the Spartans’ multi-threat quarterback in a 43-33 loss to Dorsey in the L.A. City Division I quarterfinals. Williams passed for 280 yards and two TDs (going 21 of 39) and he rushed for 79 yards on seven carries and scored twice.
