Introducing CIF Bowl Board

New video feature explains new CIF state bowl games in a different way. It features Cal-Hi Sports editor Mark Tennis and someone who’s been following the CIF bowl games longer than anyone else, starting from the first mock selection meeting held in 2005 in San Diego.

It’s amazing how often there are still articles written about teams in this year’s various CIF section football playoffs in which it is implied that a team is “hoping” for a CIF regional bowl bid or is “likely” to get one.

In this year’s new system, however, there is no “hoping.” Every team that wins a CIF section title is going to get a game at the regional level and then a win in that game would mean a shot at one of the 13 divisional state bowl games.

Coaches throughout the state also are still confused about how the new format will work. Perhaps the most questions have come about how divisions will be determined and assumptions that teams will be in the same divisions as last year or the same divisions in which they’re competing at the section level.

Instead of simply writing out a series of articles or doing sets of CIF bowl game projections, which for many reasons are somewhat meaningless because the CIF section commissioners who are meeting on Sunday, Dec. 6 will be “placing” teams in bowl game divisions and are not “seeding” them, the most effective way of going over the new system is perhaps to simply show everyone through the Cal-Hi Sports CIF Bowl Board.

In CCS Open D-III, Monte Vista Christian is the #2 seed and Sacred Heart Prep is #6. Who do you have higher in your rankings? I ask because, according to my calculations, if MVC gets to the title game opposite Riordan (who I’m also predicting will win it), they will get chosen over Milpitas, given the rules that the CCS published for state regional advancement.

I was waiting for Monte Vista Christian to play San Benito so winning that game moves them up. Ahead of Sacred Heart Prep? Probably not. Based on Palma scores. Although I don’t think they’re as good as Milpitas, if they did get that second at-large spot that would be a better fit for the bowl games than Milpitas. MVC vs. Sonora or Cap Christian from SJS makes more sense than big school Milpitas.

Mark, just watched. Great job. Why is Oceanside not in their open division in San Diego? That looks like a win, no matter who they play.

Oceanside is not a good team this year. I’ll be surprised if they make it past the quarter finals. New coach, so we’ll see where they are in five years.

It is what it is. You have no idea what your talking about. You just see 6-4. Not same team (literally). You may be drunk ?

Oside was only 6-4 this year and fell back to D1 out of the Open Division. They might not win, but don’t even have RB to worry about because they are in D2.

Oceanside is a perfect example of why the SDS should have followed the CCS and placed the Open Division runner-up in the state games over D-I. Mission Hills may have to stay home with one potential loss to Helix, yet the Pirates may get to advance with 4… one of which was 45-0 to MH.

I expect to see this changed next year.

You expect it to change. Doesn’t meet your approval ? Who are you. Oside down many starters and no qb when they played MH.

Where is Helix of La Mesa? They are the best team in San Diego. Makes no since. Mission Hills Played nobody. Oceanside or Bonita Vista should not be up there without Helix. Terrible thought process

Helix would be in the same spot of Mission Hills. It’s certainly debatable who should be No. 1 there. Mission Hills is ranked No. 1 by the media and made the finals in that division last year. You’re hung up on that and therefore don’t hear/see anything else. Oside and Bonita Vista are mentioned because they are seeded No. 1 in their divisions. We’ve written this and mentioned it many times about Helix and Mission Hills. Helix is just one spot below in the rankings so it’s not like we’ve been dismissing them all season.

Helix is not best team, says you ? When Open Bowl is over we will see. Mission Hills will drop 54 on Helix……

Wake up buddy, O’side is slightly above average this year and maybe the next few years. They are not good and will be lucky if they make the finals, let alone win it all. Stay off the meth and join us in reality.
I’ve got my money on helix, a really great team this year.

Pirates had 4 starters out 3 of those 4 loses and was rotating qbs. The starters are back and new qb is playing full game and is in groove. Also, changes in d-line scheme. You are going by record and SD Tribune. All about details. Mission Hills will dominate Helix. You are uneducated and drink every night. You also have 44 inch waist.

Oceanside was experimenting/rotating Qb first 1/4 of season. Their current Qb has found groove after starting several games and he is top-level. 3 starters including Isaia Paopao and Marcus Lau-Young returned couple weeks back and they are playing like old Pirates. Don’t let record fool you, they are playing well.

Great video. No one does it better than Mark Tennis ! It is clear now. And with section winners going, if MH or Helix loses, one of them are out. No losing teams should move forward.

It will be St. Augustine vs Helix in the open Division. Oceanside should win the division 1 and Valhalla D-2. Tennis , Mission Hills DID NOT WIN THAT DIVISION last year. OCEANSIDE beat HELIX. Do your research my friend. That’s why Helix should be ranked higher since they DID make it. Might have to go to rival site to get correct information…ha ha. P.S. Mission Hills putting up 54 on anybody wast the soft schedule.

Congrats to Helix and to St. Augustine. Many of the people who do watch San Diego football every week also had Mission Hills higher. Some years you’re right doing that, some years you’re wrong. That was wrong this time.

The system should be set up like basketball. Take the top teams based on overall schedule not CIF final results. Put them in a regional bracket based on size and football pedigree and the winners meet the northern winners of the same system. No more DLS vs a bunch of patsies with auto-bid to the Open game. They would have to play teams like Folsom/Elk Grove/Grant/Foothill etc. if those teams qualified. They already do that in the south with Pac5 putting all top large school and top small privates in one bracket.

We’d also have to get rid of the L.A. City Section in the south. Agree that the current system is flawed and favors DLS to certain degree. The NorCal sections aren’t going to disband or give up their own football playoffs for more of a regional CIF playoff. Just like the CIFSS isn’t going to break up into smaller sections. The 10-section state is what we have and at least what we have now is better than before 2006 when we had nothing.
