State Stat Stars of the Week

It was a week for the Killer Bs as freshman Hank Bachmeier of Murrieta Valley passed for 416 yards and six TDs, Roy Barajas of El Monte rushed for 427 yards and six TDs and Jacob Briggs of Placentia Valencia caught five TD passes. Briggs also did it during a game in which his coach made history by getting his 300th career win.

Hank Bachmeier (Murrieta Valley, Murrieta)
It’s offical. The 5-1 Nighthawks have a freshman phenom at quarterback. Bachmeier completed 15 of 21 passes for 416 yards and six TDs in a 56-27 triumph over Murrieta Mesa. He’s 6-2, 175 and had 308 yards and four TDs in the first half alone. For the season, Bachmeier also has 17 TD passes in six games. He went to Maurice Bell seven times for 206 yards and one TD and to Marquis Spiker five times for 150 and three.

Roy Barajas (El Monte)
Rushing for more yards than some entire teams had in their games last week, he carried 22 times for 427 yards and six touchdowns during a 74-12 win over Gabrielino of San Gabriel. The 424-yard outing is the third highest reported total in the state so far this season. It also came on a night when Roy was crowned Homecoming King at halftime. We don’t have a category in the state record book for most yards rushing on a night when named Homecoming King but this one might be it.

Deytanya Benton (John Swett, Crockett)
With the aid of a 94-yard TD, Benton racked up 325 yards rushing on 24 carries to lead Swett in its contest with Berean Christian of Walnut Creek. It wasn’t enough, however, as Berean held on to win the shootout 37-36 to hand Swett its first loss of the season.

Trevounte Bobo (Bradshaw Christian, Sacramento)
A senior who transferred from Cosumnes Oaks, Bobo had two interceptions (returning one for a score) and made 10 tackles as the Pride clobbered Rio Vista 58-0. Bobo also had four carries for 67 yards and one TD on offense.

Jacob Briggs (Valencia, Placentia)
Helping head coach Mike Marrujo win his 300th career game and keep the Tigers unbeaten at 6-0, Briggs caught eight passes for 215 yards and five touchdowns during a 42-0 win over Kennedy of La Palma. It probably makes Marrujo’s night even sweeter knowing one of his players will be getting into the state record book as well. Briggs will get in for most TD catches in one game.

Osai Brown & Derrion Grim (McNair, Stockton)
Putting up huge numbers with the passing attack all season long, Brown completed 21 of his 26 pass attempts for 325 yards and eight touchdowns in McNair’s 72-6 romp past Franklin of Stockton. Brown now has 32 TD passes for the season and hit the eight-TD mark for the second time this season. Grim continued his chase for the state record for receiving touchdowns in a season as he caught 11 passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns. He now has 22 TD catches for the season and is now 12 shy of the state record of 34 set last year by Cole Thompson of Folsom.

Jaden Casey (El Camino, Oceanside)
This 6-3, 170-pound sophomore showed he has a bright future in El Camino’s 34-28 loss to La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad. Casey completed 22 of 43 passes for 401 yards and four TDs with one interception. It was just his second varsity start. Teammate John Armentrout also was outstanding with 14 catches for 176 yards and one TD.

Anthony Catalano (Centennial, Corona)
At one point during the Huskies’ 47-14 win vs. Riverside M.L. King Catalano had 13 straight pass completions. He finished 22 of 26 for 307 yards and three TDs and directed another solid night for the Centennial offense.

Alex Chavez & Daniel Texeira (Hilmar)
This tandem connected early and often last Friday night but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 52-35 loss against Ripon. Texeira passed for 335 yards and five touchdowns while Chavez was on the receiving end of 13 passes for 211 yards and two scores.

J.T. Daniels (Mater Dei, Santa Ana)
Trinity League play got underway and this freshman showed no nerves as he completed 18 of 26 pass attempts for 454 yards and four touchdowns during a 49-35 road win against Orange Lutheran. Daniels will have an even tougher test this week against St. John Bosco of Bellflower. Osiris St. Brown was his leading target as he caught eight passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

Nathan DeJager (Bakersfield Christian)
The recent NorCal Special Teams Player of the Week tied a CIF Central Section record by making two field goals that measured 32 & 35 yards, the last one being the game winner, in a 20-17 win over previously unbeaten Chavez of Delano. DeJager now has 24 field goals in his three-year career and 210 kicking points, the second best in section history.

Chris Duncan (Taft, Woodland Hills)
Chatsworth entered its game last week undefeated but ended the night with the first loss, thanks to Duncan. He passed for 341 yards and six touchdowns as the Toreadors improved to 5-1 on the year with a 49-14 win over the Chancellors.

Jacob Duxbury (Ripon)
Going head to head with fellow state stat stars Daniel Texeira and Alex Chavez, he had quite the night rushing and receiving as he carried the ball 13 times for 207 yards and two touchdowns while catching six passes for 113 yards and one score during the Indians’ 52-35 win over Hilmar.

Zion Echols (Charter Oak, Covina)
A three-year standout for head coach Lou Farrar, Echols had one of his best games when Charter Oak defeated previously unbeaten Chino 42-14. The Cal commit rushed 18 times for 225 yards and five TDs. He also had a 92-yard kickoff return TD and added 48 yards receiving.

Rassan Fontenette (Oak Grove, San Jose)
Since the Eagles lost those early two games to St. Francis and Valley Christian, they’ve been on a roll. Fontenette has been too. He had his third straight 200-yard game last week with 286 yards on the ground and scored three times in a 48-10 victory against Leigh of San Jose.

Isaiah Garcia (Santa Maria)
In a 28-21 loss to Hueneme of Oxnard, Garcia kept the Saints close with an interception return touchdown. He also had another interception in the game plus six tackles.

Romello Harris (Tulare)
The CIF Central Section career rushing record watch continued when he tied a school record with six touchdowns on runs of 43, 21, 72, 29, 49, & 9 yards on 28 carries and rushed for 352 yards in a 40-14 victory against Monache of Porterville. Harris now has rushed for 6,910 yards (third best) and now has 86 touchdowns in his career for eighth best in section history.

Adam Herrera (Los Banos)
While he didn’t throw the ball very often during the Tigers’ 59-20 win over El Capitan of Merced he did pass for 120 yards and two touchdowns. It was with his legs, however, in which Herrera did the most damage. He rushed for 319 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.

Peyton Henry (Monte Vista, Danville)
The junior kicker nailed a 52-yard field goal, one of the five longest so far in the state this season, and also made one from 36 yards out when the Mustangs topped Amador Valley of Pleasanton 34-12.

Lucas Johnson (Mt. Carmel, San Diego)
In leading the Sundevils to their third straight win, Johnson piled up 301 yards rushing as a quarterback and scored five TDs. He also completed 16 of 29 passes for 144 yards and another score.

Isaiah Jones (Porterville)
He set a school record by scoring six touchdowns on runs 17, 11, 9, 53, 20 & 17 yards plus two 2-point conversions in a wild 61-35 triumph over Mission Oak of Tulare. Jones also had 33 carries for 306 yards. For Mission Oak, QB Trey McJunkin tied his school record by passing for five touchdowns on 21 of 40 for 302 yards.

Mique Juarez (North, Torrance)
Chalk up seven more TDs accounted for after Juarez (the USC commit) led the Saxons past Centennial of Compton 49-0. In addition to throwing for four TDs and running for two others, Juarez also returned the opening kickoff 90 yards to paydirt.

Dillon Keefe (El Modena, Orange)
Scoring two touchdowns while playing on the defensive side of the ball, Keefe intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and ended the game with a 26-yard fumble return for a score on the final play of the game during a 20-7 win over Esperanza of Anaheim.

Jacky Lauvasa & Aidan Verba-Hamilton (Riordan, S.F.)
Lauvasa, the burly QB for the Crusaders, tied a West Catholic Athletic League record with five TD passes and completed 15 of 21 passes for 311 yards in that wild-and-wacky 66-45 win last Saturday vs. Serra of San Mateo. Lauvasa also ran for 42 yards on 10 carries. Verba-Hamilton, meanwhile, broke a WCAL record with four TD catches and finished with eight receptions for 205 yards. One of those that was tied for WCAL record at three TD catches for a single game was NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann from Serra. Aidan also had seven tackles on defense and recovered a fumble.

Andreas Litton (Bella Vista, Fair Oaks)
He helped the Broncos win by double digits after being down double digits after the first quarter in a 46-31 win over Oakmont of Roseville. Litton rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns on just 13 carries.

Travion McGee (Morningside, Inglewood)
He’s teamed with senior WR/DB Addarus Wilson to make it a memorable season so far for The Side. In last week’s 24-21 victory vs. Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates, McGee hit on 17 of 34 passes for 382 yards and two scores. He had the game-winner on a 47-yard pass to Jaylin Wright with 5:48 left.

Chris Murray (Lawndale)
The senior quarterback rushed for 250 yards on 17 carries and scored five touchdowns for Lawndale in its 48-41 win over Culver City. Murray didn’t throw much, but did have a 26-yard TD pass to Jalen Walker.

Jorge Najera (Los Amigos, Fountain Valley)
For the first time this season, the Lobos won a game as Najera, their senior running back, had a busy night. He carried the ball 35 times for 224 yards and one touchdown during the 34-28 road win against Bolsa Grande of Garden Grove. QB Johnny Alvarado added four touchdowns rushing.

Chad Olberding (Fountain Valley)
Outscoring Newport Harbor of Newport Beach on his own, he rushed for 253 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries as the Barons went on the road and returned home with the 51-20 win over the Sailors.

Ish Perez (Davis)
The Blue Devils got back to .500 on the season with a 38-10 win over Sheldon of Sacramento behind Perez, who set a school record by rushing for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

Mason Randall (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton)
On just 11 passing attempts, Randall wound up with nine completions, 282 yards and four TDs to help the Gators trounce Terra Nova of Pacifica 47-13. The SHP offense, which produced 77 points in one game last month, also had 508 total yards against the Tigers. Terra Nova QB Joey Pledger passed for 361 yards and two TDs in defeat.

Ryan Robards & Gavin Reinwald (Elk Grove)
Robards is no stranger to being listed here as he rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns while Reinwald caught seven passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns in the Thundering Herd’s 63-14 win over Jesuit of Carmichael.

Keyron Scott (Tehachapi)
The promising junior rushed for a game high of 253 yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 23, & 70 yards in a 42-26 win over Independence of Bakersfield.

Draytwoine Shaw (Troy, Fullerton)
When you see a game ending up with a final score of 7-6 you wouldn’t expect to see a big time performance on offense but Shaw sure did in Troy’s 7-6 win over Sunny Hills of Fullerton He led the way with 206 yards rushing on 26 carries and scored the Warriors’ only TD of the game.

J.P. Shohfi (San Marino)
He makes the honor roll this time for multi-purpose prowess as San Marino beat Temple City last week 56-6. Shohfi caught seven passes for 137 yards and two TDs, intercepted a pair of passes on defense and went 78 yards on a kickoff return.

Hunter Simmons (Huntington Beach)
Striking his way through the holes created by the Oilers’ offensive line, he rushed for 280 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries in 32-0 triumph vs. Marina of Huntington Beach.

E.J. Stewart (Rancho Verde, Moreno Valley)
It was a dominating outing for the Mustang offense and their QB in a 70-10 romp past Valley View of Moreno Valley. Stewart connected on 11 of 16 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns. RB Daeoun Pope also shined with 180 yards rushing and four scores.

Harold Tidwell (Concord)
He pushed himself to nearly 1,000 yards rushing for the season after exploding for 358 yards on 27 carries and scoring four times when the Minutemen bombarded College Park of Pleasant Hill 54-8.

Andrew Tovar (Cathedral, Los Angeles)
Helping the Phantoms remain undefeated with a 56-17 win over La Salle of Pasadena, Tovar shined by passing for 351 yards and five touchdowns while completing 19 of his 26 pass attempts.

Rajah Wade (Homestead, Cupertino)
It’s the second mention of the year for Wade, who had a 92-yard TD run and finished with 253 yards rushing as the Mustangs knocked off Fremont of Sunnyvale, 27-7.

Aidan Willard (Justin-Siena, Napa)
Knocking off previously undefeated St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano with a 43-40 victory, he passed for 117 yards and one score while doing most of his damage running the ball with 203 yards and one score on 23 carries.
