Once again for this season, only one is named from each region for offense, defense and special teams and we’re going to do our best to spread it around as much as possible. This week’s honors go to players from Stockton, Pittsburg, Sacramento, San Marino, San Diego and Los Angeles.
Note: For purposes of this feature, we are considering the CIF Central Section to be in the north.

Offensive Player of the Week
Derrion Grim (McNair, Stockton) Sr.
Before this senior heads to Boise State, he is going to make sure he makes the most of his final high school season. He certainly started it off in a big way as he returned the game’s opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown during the Eagles’ 74-26 win over Calaveras of San Andreas.
Not content with just one touchdown, Grim went on to catch 10 passes for 238 yards and six more touchdowns. McNair quarterback Osai Brown was nearly perfect as well. He completed 17 of his 19 pass attempts for 395 yards and eight touchdowns.
For most TD catches in one game and for most TD passes, both Grim and Brown will get their names entered into the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book.

Defensive Player of the Week
Charlie Ramirez (Pittsburg) Sr.
Making a statement in their opening game, the Pirates’ defense with Ramirez in the middle recorded a shutout over perennial playoff team California of San Ramon team by a 28-0 final score.
Not only did this senior captain lead the team with 14 tackles from his linebacker position, but he also blocked a punt which set up the lone touchdown of the first half.
“We just got after the ball and played hard,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle after the game.
As a junior, Ramirez earned All-East Bay honors from the Contra Costa Times.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Jamarri Jackson (Christian Brothers, Sacramento) Jr.
On offense, defense and special teams, this 5-foot-10 junior found the end zone for scores during a 48-9 win for the Falcons over River City of West Sacramento.
On offense, he rushed for a 42-yard touchdown and caught a 34-yard touchdown pass. Not happy enough with scoring just on offense, Jackson also intercepted a pass and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown while on special teams he returned a punt 40 yards for a score.
Last season, Jackson rushed for 1,055 yards and 19 touchdowns while catching one touchdown pass and intercepting seven passes on defense. He was named to the Cal-Hi Sports all-state sophomore team.

Offensive Player of the Week
Carson Glazier (San Marino) Sr.
Averaging more than 300 yards passing per game last season, he passed for 3,704 yards and 54 touchdowns his junior year and his senior year is off to a strong start.
Glazier completed 27 of his 30 pass attempts for 404 yards and three touchdowns during a 49-10 win over Arroyo of El Monte.
Last season, Glazier twice passed for over 400 yards in a game, including his season-best coming during a 23 of 30 performance for 418 yards and seven touchdowns in their final win.
Teammate J.P. Shohfi, one of the most prolific returning receivers in the state, also had a big night for the Titans. He had 12 catches for 214 yards and two TDs and rushed for a pair of scores.
”I think our passing game was pretty efficient tonight,” head coach Mike Hobbie told MidValleySports.com. “Our quarterback saw the field well.”

Defensive Player of the Week
Terry Wright (St. Augustine, San Diego) Sr.
The Saints had tons of big plays from their defense during a 41-3 win over Ramona to open the season and this senior defensive back was part of two of them.
First, Wright returned a fumble 87 yards for a score then later he intercepted a pass and returned it 99 yards for another touchdown.
Also in the first half, teammate Darrell Broussard intercepted a pass and returned it 79 yards for a score as St. Augustine opened up a 41-0 lead by halftime. With a running clock in the second half, a 32-yard field goal with minutes left to play prevented the team from recording the shutout.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Ramses Hernandez (Fairfax, Los Angeles) Sr.
Another player who scored in multiple ways, a four touchdown night from Hernandez wasn’t enough to prevent the Lions from opening the season with a 51-34 road loss to Roosevelt of Los Angeles.
Not only did he rush for 202 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, but Hernandez also scored two touchdowns on special teams, returning both a punt and a kickoff for six points.
Last season, Hernandez rushed for 1,656 yards and 12 touchdowns with his best game coming early in the season when he had 294 yards and four touchdowns during a win over Birmingham of Lake Balboa.
