In scanning the 55 years of football that has been played at Del Oro of Loomis, the most impressive feat is that in all that time the longest losing streak is just five games.
This proves that the best programs not only know how to win but when times are tough the losing is kept to a minimum.
Del Oro’s three five-game losing streaks also were never in the midst of one season. All five started in one season, then extended to the next. In fact, the school has never even had a one-win season with just three two-win seasons in its all-time archive.
After putting together Del Oro’s archive, the school’s reported all-time record of 403-174-9 with a winning percentage of 69.5 actually is good enough to be among those on the all-time state list. The Golden Eagles are now sandwiched in between Carson (69.8 percent) and Los Angeles Loyola (67.8 percent).
Two seasons ago, head coach Casey Taylor guided the Golden Eagles to a berth opposite Bakersfield in the CIF Division I state bowl game. They couldn’t handle the Drillers’ speed and lost, which was similar to the team’s other CIF state final appearance in 2011 in a loss to Helix of La Mesa.
In recent years, Del Oro’s schedule has become brutal, including last year when the squad faced both De La Salle of Concord and Folsom. Still, the win-loss record was a respectable 6-6.
In many years when the Golden Eagles have played all of these difficult schedules, they’ve tended to surge toward the end of a season. It turns out that late season surges are more a part of Del Oro’s DNA than imagined. In the school’s very first two seasons – 1960 and 1961 – the team went 5-0 after starting 0-3 and then 5-0 after starting 1-2.
