Betweeen Colin Slater, Ethan Richardson and Rebecca Gallis, they’re keeping CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett pretty busy these days. A huge week by All-American candidate Sabrina Ionusu of Orinda Miramonte, meanwhile, also stands out.
As has been customary for many years, we collect the state stat stars in support of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac. The book has been published seven times (the most recent, though, was 2009) and is as official as a state record book can be since no other exists. BOYS BASKETBALL
Tyler Burch (Westminster)
One of several regulars in this feature, Burch had a huge night scoring a Klay Thompson-esque 33 points in the fourth quarter and finishing with 55 but the Lions lost to Ocean View of Huntington Beach 89-79 and will share the Golden West League championship with the Seahawks. Named as our SoCal Boys Player of the Week on Tuesday, he also made 13 of 16 from the free throw line and his 33 points in one quarter was just two points short of tying the reported state record set back in 1965.
Colin Slater (Immanuel, Reedley)
Slick and smooth junior scored a school-record 52 points during a 96-66 win over Selma. Slater, still making up for lost time due to being ineligible last season, went 11 of 13 from the free throw line while making 19 of his 27 field goal attempts. He might have been the NorCal Player of the Year, but he was already chosen once for that honor from earlier in the season. Slater also had 10 rebounds and eight assists in the game against the Bears.
Ethan Richardson (Madera)
According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, the senior set a school record by scoring 47 points in a 53-39 victory over host Sanger. Richardson made 14-of-18 free throws with 29 points coming in the second half and he also pulled down 17 rebounds.
Mo Abdulrasul (Fremont, Sunnyvale)
Wilcox of Santa Clara had to be wishing for no mo Mo as he poured in 44 points during a 63-59 win for the Firebirds. Abdulrasul also scored 24 points during a win over Milpitas last week.
Alex Copeland (Harvard-Westlake, N. Hollywood)
Despite Alex scoring a game-high 44 points, it wasn’t enough to prevent a 79-71 loss to Loyola of Los Angeles in the final game of Mission League play.
Lewis Hayes (Chavez, Stockton)
The Titans ended the season as co-champions in the San Joaquin Athletic Association after Hayes scored a season-high 41 points while grabbing 15 rebounds during a 76-52 win over Stagg of Stockton. On the year, he is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds per game and was recently named by the Stockton Record as its weekly MVP.
Jacob Araya (Stockton Christian)
It was a happy trip home from Groveland for Araya and his teammates after he poured in a career-high 40 points in a 82-44 triumph over Tioga of Groveland. Araya made seven 3-pointers to help account for his total and helpd the Eagles finish 7-1 in the Mountain Valley League.
Lonzo Ball (Chino Hills)
With his brother LiAngelo back in the lineup, he did the heavy lifting on offense by scoring 38 points during a 95-73 win over Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga.
Sean Fernandez (North Hollywood)
He outscored Grant’s leading scorer Chad Holloway finishing with 37 points but his team didn’t provide as much help on the offensive end as they suffered the 75-69 loss.
Joey Sfreddo (University, Irvine)
Despite finishing in last place in the Pacific Coast League, the Trojans ended the season on a positive note when scored 37 points during a 85-68 win over Irvine.
Stephen Thompson Jr. (Bishop Montgomery, Torrance)
The Knights finished undefeated in Del Rey League action and grabbed the No. 1 seed for the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs after Thompson Jr. pumped in 34 points in a 85-70 win over Serra of Gardena.
Isaiah Johnson (Tehachapi)
One of the top players in Kern County, Johnson scored a game high of 32 points in a 71-50 win over Wasco.
Josh Rodriguez (Sonora, La Habra)
During the final week of Freeway League play, Rodriguez made sure the Raiders would be headed on the freeway with a win and feeling good. He scored 32 points during a 84-62 victory over Buena Park.
David Awolowo (Gunderson, San Jose)
In a week that saw him finish with 51 points and 23 rebounds in a pair of wins, Awolowo’s biggest performance was 31 points that came in a 61-52 win over Prospect of San Jose.
Paris Austin (Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland)
While Ivan Rabb is the big time recruit, this senior guard headed to Boise State is a big reason the Dragons are No. 1 in the state. He scored 31 points during a 74-69 win last week over Castro Valley.
Chris Terry (El Camino Real, Woodland Hills)
He scored 31 points as the Conquistadors defeated Chatsworth 75-59 in West Valley League play. They ended the season 9-1 in league games, which was good enough to win the league title.
Stone Gettings (Loyola, Los Angeles)
It seemed like Stone was throwing a rock into an ocean and couldn’t miss with 30 points during a 79-71 win for the Cubs over Harvard-Westlake in the Mission League season finale.
David Rico (Kerman)
The sophomore continues to score at a high rate for the Lions. He scored a game high of 30 points in a 58-53 win last week over Chowchilla.
Brae Ivey (Edison, Huntington Beach)
Despite a huge second half that saw him score 24 of his 30 points after halftime, the Chargers ended up on the losing end of a 82-72 final score against Los Alamitos to share the Sunset League title.
Jayce Johnson (Santa Monica)
He came one field goal short of the 20-20 double-double as he grabbed 20 rebounds while also scoring 18 points during a 60-25 Ocean League win over El Segundo.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sabrina Ionescu (Miramonte, Orinda)
A player that could certainly be in the mix for Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year, she had a quadruple-double last week during a 71-52 win over Alhambra of Martinez. Ionescu scored 24 points, had 12 assists, grabbed 11 rebounds and also had 10 steals. She also had a triple-double with 21 points, 19 rebounds and 19 assists in a 94-57 win against Dublin.
Destiny Littleton (Bishop’s, La Jolla)
Scoring at least 45 points for the third game in a row, she scored 45 points and grabbed seven rebounds during a 71-59 win over Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach. For the second time this season, she made 21 free throws in a game, going 21 of 26 from the stripe. Littleton is averaging 34.3 points per game, the top reported total in the state and one of the best in the nation.

Dijonai Carrington (Horizon Christian, San Diego)
There are five or six San Diego area girls this season in which we could pick SoCal Player of the Week every week. Carrington is another of them. While 32 rebounds in a game for most would be a season-high, it was only her third highest single-game rebounding performance of the season to go with a season-high 42 points during a 67-50 win over Douglass of Los Angeles. Carrington also last week had 36 points and 16 rebounds in a 76-63 win over Serra of San Diego.
Amber Melgoza (Santa Barbara)
Her season scoring average increased to 33.9 points per game after she scored 39 points and grabbed eight rebounds during a 68-62 win over Buena of Ventura.
Kayla Washington (Cajon, San Bernardino)
When you score 36 points, also grabbing just half of that total in rebounds is very hard to do but Washington did just that in a 65-57 victory for the Cowgirls against Eisenhower of Rialto. Cajon and Washington entered the CIFSS Open Division playoffs at 25-1 with a No. 15 seed and lost its first game 59-42 to No. 2 Long Beach Poly.
Ali Engelhardt (Mt. Carmel, San Diego)
After a rare week of not being listed in this feature, Engelhardt finds herself back in familiar state stat star of the week surroundings after going a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line and finishing with 35 points and 17 rebounds during a 73-33 win over Rancho Bernardo of San Diego.
Regina Sankey (Branham, San Jose)
Nearly outscoring Willow Glen of San Jose on her own, she finished with 35 points as the Bruins picked up a 52-41 win. Also grabbing 16 rebounds in that win, she also had 29 points and 21 rebounds during a 57-46 win over Silver Creek of San Jose and was named as one of our NorCal/SoCal players of the week.
Taylor Pierce (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad)
The Mavericks have only lost five games all season long and this senior captain made sure the winning continued last week. She scored a season-high 34 points during a 82-14 win over El Camino of Oceanside and then scored 26 points during a 83-37 win over Rancho Buena Vista of Vista.
Rebecca Gallis (Kern Valley, Lake Isabella)
With more and more newspapers making it harder to find big-time performances without paying for subscriptions, players like her and others that have their stats reported to MaxPreps make it easy for them to be featured here on a nearly weekly basis. Gallis scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds during a 65-25 win over Frazier Mountain of Lebec and then had 29 points and 17 rebounds during a 43-30 win over Rosamond. According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, Gallis also had 19 made free throws against Rosamond, the sixth most in section history.
Aarion McDonald (Brookside Christian, Stockton)
Coming up two steals short of yet another triple-double, the University of Washington-bound Aarion McDonald had 32 points and 12 rebounds during a 71-55 win over VA Excel of Stockton. Brookside Christian and McDonald are the top seed in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.
Katrina Lusky (Calvin Christian, Escondido)
Another player who nearly averages a state stat star worthy performance on a nightly basis, Lusky had 30 points and 13 rebounds in a 49-35 victory over Parker of San Diego. The senior captain averages 27.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game.
Britney Gonzalez (Jurupa Hills, Fontana)
Outscoring Indian Springs of San Bernardino on her own, Gonzalez had 30 points during a 66-28 win as the Spartans finished 7-3 and in second place in the San Andreas League behind Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino.
Katie Young (The King’s Academy, Sunnyvale)
Putting the Knights in position to win the West Bay Skyline League title, she scored 30 points during a 59-41 win over Mercy of Burlingame.
Britney Thomas (San Jacinto)
Before heading next to UC Santa Barbara in the fall, she had led the Tigers to a 22-4 record and was named earlier this week as one of our SoCal/NorCal players of the week with 21 points and 23 rebounds during a 69-31 win over Beaumont and then 28 points and 16 rebounds during a 87-13 win over West Valley of Hemet.
Cydnee Kinslow (Freedom, Oakley)
While it came in a loss, this shot blocking machine recorded another triple-double with 14 points, 21 rebounds and 11 blocked shots during a 53-46 loss to Pittsburg. It was her 7th triple-double of the season. With 9.6 blocks per game, in fact, Kinslow is almost averaging a triple-double.
Precious Younger (Bear Creek, Stockton)
With a chance to make program history, the Lady Bruins defeated McNair of Stockton 55-48 for their first league championship. Younger, a junior, led the way with 16 points, 24 rebounds and six steals.
Lillian Olson (Sacramento Waldorf, Fair Oaks)
Had it come in a win, Olson would have had a better chance to be one of our players of the week. She had a season-high 24 rebounds while also scoring 15 points and blocking five shots during a 50-46 loss to Forest Lake Christian of Auburn.
