Last week on the FOX 40 Final Quarter high school football show, hosts Jim Crandell and Kristina Werner revealed a list of players with the top five single-game defensive records in CIF Sac-Joaquin Section history, according to CalHiSports.com.
Here is what that countdown revealed with player, high school and notes:
1. (tie) Sean Maurice (Beyer) & Brandon Parker (Lincoln, Stockton)
They both hold the state record for intercepting four passes in one quarter — Maurice in 1980, Parker in 1998.
2. Mark Smith (Sacramento)
He became the only player in state history to recover five fumbles in one game in 1986 against Johnson.
3. Nick Baxter (Colfax)
He had four recovered fumbles and two interceptions to tie a state record in 2000 against Mesa Verde.
4. John Krueger (Lodi)
He is the only player in section history with five interceptions in one game, which he did in 1983 against Galt.
5. Earl Hanibal (Norte del Rio)
From closed school but still in the books for 106-yard interception return TD in 1973 against Foothill.
