PASSING
Sam Metcalf (Farmersville)
Our NorCal Offensive Player of the Week passed for 496 yards and four touchdowns as he completed 32 of his 53 pass attempts during a 45-42 in over Immanuel of Reedley. He currently is second in state history for career passing yards behind Folsom’s Jake Browning and should end the season second for career TD passes as well.
Jorge Amaya (Hawkins, Los Angeles)
Nearly perfect during a 42-0 win over Angelou of Los Angeles he completed 20 of his 25 pass attempts for 433 yards and three touchdown
Patrick Glasgow (Calvary Chapel, Santa Ana)
Completing 27 of his 40 pass attempts for 428 yards and six touchdowns wasn’t enough to prevent the Eagles from suffering a 59-47 loss to Saddleback of Santa Ana last Saturday afternoon. Joey Cox caught nine passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while Luke Thompson added 10 catches for 131 yards and one score.
Josh Gaudet (Horizon Christian, San Diego)
He’s been putting up gaudy totals in the passing game all season and did it again during a 47-31 victory against La Jolla Country Day. Gaudet completed 24 of 36 passes for 420 yards and four TDs and is now well over 3,000 yards for the season.
Jesse Hanckel (Village Christian, Sun Valley)
In one of the craziest games of the week, Hanckel hit on 25 of 49 passes for 415 yards and two TDs but it wasn’t enough in a 48-37 loss to Whittier Christian of La Habra. His previous season best was 250 yards.
Joe Hernandez (Whittier Christian, La Habra)
Just a sophomore, Hernandez led the way when the Heralds picked up their first win of the season with a 48-37 win over Village Christian of Sun Valley. He completed 31 of his 40 pass attempts for 402 yards and four touchdowns.
Caden Voges (Sacramento)
No stranger to having his name listed here, this junior quarterback set a school record with eight touchdown passes, which also gets him into the state record book, during the Dragons’ 60-0 win over Johnson of Sacramento. Voges also finished 18 of 27 for 394 yards, which puts him close to 3,000 for the season to go along with 39 TD passes.
Osai Brown (McNair, Stockton)
Leading the Eagles to a 60-22 win over Edison of Stockton, he completed 18 of his 24 pass attempts for 389 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 45 yards and a score.
Zach Taylor (Buena Park)
OC Varsity named him as its Offensive Player of the Week after he completed 25 of his 34 pass attempts for 370 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-19 Freeway League triumph over Troy of Fullerton. Taylor also scored once on the ground.
Tristan Gebbia (Calabasas)
This QB helped the Coyotes move into position to win the Canyon League championship with a 38-28 win over Agoura. Gebbia connected on 21 of 34 passes for 368 yards and three TDs. Keyshawn Johnson Jr. also had a big outing with seven catches for 144 yards and one TD while running back Chris Brooks easily could have gotten a state stat star mention separately for his 244 yards rushing plus two TDs.
Nico Portillo (Corcoran)
The QB passed for 351 yards on 20 completions in 30 attempts and hit for three touchdowns in a 42-6 beatdown of Strathmore. Nico also rushed for 78 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Chris Guillen (Christian Brothers, Sacramento)
Not only did he complete 17 of his 25 pass attempts for 345 yards and one touchdown, but he also rushed for more than 100 yards with 102 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries as the Falcons defeated El Camino of Sacramento 35-32.
Kaylor Sullivan (Fort Bragg)
He’s had bigger stat games, but Sullivan’s 25 completions in 36 throws for 343 yards and two TDs came in Fort Bragg’s biggest win of the season so far – a 35-20 triumph over previously unbeaten St. Helena. Sullivan should go past 3,000 yards for the season in his next game.
RECEIVING
Noah Evans (Whittier Christian, La Habra)
As the leading target in the passing game for sophomore QB Joe Hernandez, he caught 14 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns when the Heralds defeated Village Christian of Sun Valley 48-37 for their first win of the season.
Carter Otte (Verdugo Hills, Tujunga)
Gage Van Kempen looked his way often during the Dons 46-28 win over Chavez of San Fernando as he caught 12 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
Andrew Hong (Village Christian, Sun Valley)
Just like Noah Evans above was a hot receiver in that Whittier Christian-Village Christian matchup, so was Hong. He finished with 12 receptions for 203 yards and one score in the loss.
Justin Rogers (Los Angeles)
It was performance that might not go down in ancient history but his nine catches for 229 yards and two touchdowns played a big part in the Romans defeating Rancho Dominguez of Long Beach 35-13.
Kyle Harlin (Villa Park)
Counting heavily on their passing attack during a 49-7 win over Foothill of Santa Ana, he was the leading target as he caught seven passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
Guy Demazeliere (Brethren Christian, Huntington Beach)
A name we have become very familiar with this season, he caught seven passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns when the Warriors defeated Sage Hill of Newport Beach 48-21. On the season, he also has caught 55 passes for 1,100 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Seth McCoy (Rio Linda)
Wasting no time in putting points on the board, the Knights scored 43 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second quarter during a 71-14 win over Pioneer of Woodland. Despite catching just four passes in that game, McCoy turned those catches into three touchdowns and 178 yards.
Jaylinn Hawkins (Buena Park)
There were a few games last week that saw state stat star worthy performances by someone from both teams and Buena Park’s 41-19 win over Troy of Fullerton was one of them. Hawkins caught 13 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
RUSHING
Romello Harris (Tulare)
We couldn’t choose Harris as the NorCal Offensive Player of the Week because we already did earlier this season. The junior had another monster outing to lead Tulare past Porterville 55-34. According to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett, Harris became the 15th player in section history to rush for more than 400 yards in a game as he finished with 402 for a new school record. Harris, who also scored five TDs, broke the previous school record of 383 set in 2000 by Dominique Dorsey.
Isaiah Jones (Porterville)
Also a junior, Jones almost matched Romello Harris stride for stride in last week’s game against Tulare. He had 32 carries for 345 yards and scored four touchdowns. These are the same two teams that two years played in a 86-79 game that was won by Porterville.
Donovan Ransom (San Pasqual Academy, Escondido)
The junior standout piled up 345 yards on 15 carries and scored four times as San Pasqual topped St. Joseph Academy of Escondido 50-30 in an eight-man game.
Miles Harrison (Clayton Valley, Concord)
In a game that we were at last week, and was televised on Comcast Hometown Network, it was a performance that Harrison will remember for a long time. He not only returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown but then carried the ball 33 times for 336 yards and five more touchdowns as the Ugly Eagles won at Concord 48-40 in a matchup of unbeaten teams.
Tony Williams (Shadow Hills, Indio)
With a big time performance against Big Bear of Big Bear City he was handed the ball 31 times and rushed for 327 yards and five touchdowns as the Knights picked up a 48-34 win.
Nathan Meadors (San Gorgonio, San Bernardino)
One of the top all-around players in the Inland Empire, Meadors carried 14 times for 288 yards and three TDs to lead San G past Jurupa Hills 52-10. Meadors actually played quarterback to get those yards and also threw a pair of TD passes.
Sarkis Panossian (Western Christian, Upland)
Selected as our SoCal Offensive Player of the Week, he rushed for 272 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries while also throwing a touchdown pass during a 47-44 win over Aquinas of San Bernardino. He also threw a 64-yard TD pass, had 10 tackles and a forced fumble on defense and also did the kicking with five made PATs.
Devontre Hale (Poly, Riverside)
Making Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley almost feel like they were facing Matt Forte from the Chicago Bears, he rushed for 268 yards on 45 carries and five touchdowns (all in the second half) to lead the Poly Bears to a 59-48 triumph.
Robert Grier (Immanuel, Reedley)
He rushed for 265 yards on 37 carries and scored two touchdowns but Immanuel couldn’t slow down QB Sam Metcalf and company in a 45-42 loss. Teammate Caleb Paulsen also passed for 229 yards, including a 95-yard TD to Aaron Wilson, as the two teams combined for 1,137 yards of offense.
Emilio Martinez (Palma, Salinas)
A sophomore to watch from a program that has many promising young players, Martinez powered through the Salinas defense for 260 yards on 36 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead Palma to a 45-35 victory.
J.J. Taylor (Centennial, Corona)
In the battle of Corona, it was the Huskies and Taylor who defeated Santiago of Corona 60-28. The junior standout ran for 257 yards and six touchdowns during the Big VIII win.
Andrew Ortiz (Brawley)
Since Imperial no longer has Royce Freeman, it wasn’t much trouble for Ortiz and has teammates to post a 35-8 win over Imperial last week. Ortiz rushed for 238 yards on 20 carries and scored three times. He also now had 1,248 yards for the season.
Matt Matlock (Newbury Park)
It’s been the passing game that has been generating the most headlines for the Panthers this season, but Matlock was the main story in last week’s 53-28 victory over Camarillo. He rambled for 228 yards on 24 carries and scored twice.
Bryant Seaman (Yuba City)
Helping the Honkers keep their postseason hopes alive, he was the man in the running game as he carried the ball 23 times for 225 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-25 victory over River Valley of Yuba City. Teammate John Horn also came up with two more interceptions on defense and now has 10 for the season.
Josh Moran (Loara, Anaheim)
Yet to win a game this season, the Saxons did score a season-high in points during their 50-28 loss to Segerstrom of Santa Ana as he carried the ball 18 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
Connor Hamilton (Calaveras, San Andreas)
While it wasn’t the 287 yards and six touchdowns he had from earlier this season, Hamilton did rush for 220 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries during a 50-44 win over Summerville.
Gabe Watson (Piedmont)
Named the East Bay Athlete of the Week by the Contra Costa Times, this junior rushed for 220 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries while recording five tackles from the secondary as the undefeated Highlanders defeated Mt. Eden 42-24.
Moby Contreras (Los Amigos, Fountain Valley)
Despite opponents knowing he is going to get handed the ball a majority of the time, he continues to put up big rushing performances. In a 30-16 win over Rancho Alamitos of Garden Grove, he carried 26 times for 219 yards and three touchdowns. It also was his sixth 200-yard outing of the season and put him over 1,600 yards total.
MULTI-PURPOSE, DEFENSE & MORE
Sammy Gray, Raphael Lewis & Christian McFarland (Cosumnes Oaks, Elk Grove)
While it didn’t set or tie a state record for interception returns for touchdowns in a game, which stands at five, each of these players recorded a pick-six during a 65-14 win over Bella Vista of Fair Oaks. Trevounte Bobo also scored on the defensive side of the ball when he returned a fumble for a touchdown against the Broncos.
Sonnyboy Orfiano (San Bernardino)
In addition to hitting on 16 of 23 passes for 275 yards and two scores in a 43-28 victory against Vista del Lago of Moreno Valley, Sonnyboy gets an attaboy for also adding 100 yards of rushing. Teammate Alex Mattison contributed as well with 225 yards rushing and four scores.
Joey DeMarco (Torrey Pines, San Diego)
Our SoCal Defensive Player of the Week led the Falcons to a 14-0 shutout of Oceanside El Camino. The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder had four sacks, one batted pass, seven hurries, forced a fumble and was in on 10.5 tackles in all.
Brad Mickey (Arroyo Grande)
A versatile talent for the one of the top teams in the CIFSS Northwest Division, Mickey came up big with three interceptions to help the Eagles beat Righetti of Santa Maria 30-7. Mickey also now has eight interceptions for the season.
Oluwoli Betiku (Serra, Gardena)
It was a ferocious outing for the Serra defense against Alemany of Mission Hills with nine sacks in all that helped the Cavs top the Warriors 38-21. Betiku had three of those sacks and also finished with nine tackles (five for loss).
Niamey Harris (Mission, San Francisco)
Normally it’s a bad idea if you intercept a pass deep in the end zone and try for the return but this sophomore went ahead and took off after intercepting a pass six yards deep and 106 yards later he was standing in the other end zone for six points. The big play started a 28-0 run in the fourth quarter in a 46-16 win by the Bears over Balboa of San Francisco.
Brandon Russell (Tracy)
Scoring in three different ways, he rushed for 50 yards and one touchdown on three carries, caught one pass that went for a 62-yard score and returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score during the Bulldogs’ 49-29 loss to St. Mary’s of Stockton. Russell also forced a fumble and had four tackles on defense.
Jack Russell (San Clemente)
Not only did he catch a touchdown pass from Sam Darnold but he also intercepted a pass and returned it 98 yards for six points during a 49-10 win over Laguna Hills.
Jack Marren (Menlo School, Atherton)
Scoring the lone touchdown of the second half on a 26-yard interception return late in the third quarter, he was a key part of the Knights defeating Menlo-Atherton 28-20. He also scored in the first half on a 7-yard run and on a 69-yard touchdown catch and finished with 11 tackles in all.
Grady Higgins (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM)
OCVarsity’s Defensive Player of the Week had 12 tackles while forcing and recovering a fumble during the Eagles’ 22-17 win over Servite of Anaheim.
Calvin Farris (Grossmont, La Mesa)
His yardage wasn’t reported but Calvin had the wheels turning with five TD passes and two TD runs to account for seven scores that came in a 63-29 win over Mt. Miguel of Spring Valley.
COACHING
Veteran head coach Tom Casanova of Caruthers became the latest to join the state’s 200-win club when his team defeated Riverdale 28-14 last week. Earlier this season, Terry Logue from Bear River (Lake of the Pines) won his 200th career game. Casanova has been coaching at Caruthers for 28 years. The Blue Raiders were led in the win by Uriel Arredondo, who rushed for 208 yards on 19 carries and scored three TDs, one coming on a 90-yarder.
As has been customary for many years, we collect the state stat stars in support of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac. The book has been published seven times (the most recent, though, was 2009) and is as official as a state record book can be since no other exists. To report a State Stat Star of the Week of your own, please email details to markjtennis@gmail.com.
Note: All football state records are in the process of being added to this web site. Some of them already have been added. They will be part of our Gold Club membership. To join our Gold Club today, please CLICK HERE.

Hey, CalHiSports, can Los Angeles High get some love? We’re 8-1, overall under first year coach Eric Scott, and we are in first place of the Exposition League at 5-1. And our sophomore Quarterback, Kaymen Cureton, has thrown for 1,626 yards with 16 touchdown passes against only 3 interceptions in just 7 games. Yesterday,vs Santee, he was 10 for 18 for 314 yards, 2 TD passes, 1 receiving. Not to mention, our senior running back, Richard Smith who racked up 300 plus total yards by himself. And there are others like Justin Rogers, wr/db, awesome, Elijah Thompson, ath/wr/ss, incredible athlete and Martin Andrus, DE, dominant. What do our boys need to do to get some recognition? Just saying!!!
Getting information from your part of the L.A. City Section has been very hard to get since Ron Guild is no longer covering those schools for the Wave newspapers. We will be glad to list L.A. High players in the state stat stars feature. Photos are always welcome as well. But if no one reports the information, how are we supposed to know? People think we’re out there deciding on purpose not to include a player in a feature like that, which is definitely not the case. Everything we find that exceeds certain standards (200 yds rushing, 300 pass, 5 TDs, 200 rec, 2 ints, 4 sacks, combination) we get it into the state stat stars. My email address is easy to get on the site but if you need it it’s markjtennis@gmail.com. Thanks.
How about the low tier schools with great athletes a perfect example would be montclair highschool last I checked they had a 5″9 DL with 10 sacks! Or Shawn Wilson of pomona high school with un believable catches for an outstanding 92 points overall!
