State Stat Stars of the Week

RUSHING

Greg Johnson (Hawkins, Los Angeles)
In the Hawks’ 74-0 win over an overwhelmed Jordan of Los Angeles team, this sophomore rushed for 368 yards and four touchdowns on just five reported carries, according to MaxPreps. If confirmed, Johnson’s average of 73.6 yards per carry with a minimum of three carries would go into the state record book at No. 2, trailing only the total of 78.3 set in 1993 by Curtis Williams of Coalinga. In the same game, Johnson completed both of his pass attempts for 87 yards and one touchdown. The Hawks are only in their second season as a new school in the L.A. City Section.

Javier Moreno (Strathmore)
He shouldn’t of been complaining about wanting more touches after a 28-14 win for the Spartans over Orosi. Moreno carried the ball 31 times for 332 yards and four touchdowns. His four touchdowns included three from over 40 yards, including a 73-yard scoring run. Through three games, he has rushed for 705 yards and eight touchdowns.

Sheldon Arnold (Santee, Los Angeles)
While he didn’t rush for four touchdowns like he did in the first two games of the season, he did rush for a season-high 313 yards with three touchdowns on 22 carries in a 31-27 win over Contreras of Los Angeles.

Michael Wright (Dinuba)
In leading the Emperors to their fourth win of the season, Wright rushed for 307 yards on 44 carries for two new school records and scored four touchdowns in a 28-22 win over El Diamante of Visalia.

Moby Contreras (Los Amigos, Fountain Valley)
He was no friend to Costa Mesa as he carried the ball 21 times for 304 yards and four touchdowns to help the Lobos improve to 2-1 with a 36-16 win over the winless Mustangs.

Chris Rom-Toribio (La Quinta)
Following his 211-yard and five-touchdown performance the week before against J.W. North of Riverside, Rom-Toribio rammed it for 304 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries during a 49-14 win over Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore.

Alec Gamboa (Madera)
One week after kicker Efren Rios made the honor roll, the Coyotes score again with Gamboa. He rushed for 293 yards on 10 carries, the third best in school history, and scored four touchdowns in a 54-21 win over Hoover of Fresno. One of Alec’s TDs came on a 84-yard kickoff return.

Oscar Gomez (St. Margaret’s, San Juan Capistrano)
The D4 South bowl game ranked Tartans moved to 3-0 with a 44-21 win over Whittier Christian of La Habra behind Gomez. The 5-foot-7 senior rushed for 271 yards and two touchdowns.

Paul Thomas (Selma)
The senior rushed for a career high of 269 yards on 18 carries and tied a school record by scoring five touchdowns as Selma beat Coalinga 37-12. Thomas scored three times on runs (90, 20, 7) and twice on pass receptions (2, 23).

Chance Trammell (Lodi)
Setting a career high for rushing yards in a game, Chance gave Stagg of Stockton no chance in a 49-27 win for the Flames. He ran for 258 yards on just 11 carries and scored three touchdowns.

Najee Harris (Antioch)
This power-packed sophomore already has some in eastern Contra Costa County comparing him to last year’s Joe Mixon of nearby Freedom (Oakley), who was MVP of the U.S. Army All-American Game. Harris already has 943 yards and 12 TDs this season after he had 245 yards and four scores in a 31-30 loss to Wood of Vacaville. We will be seeing him on Friday when the Panthers play at Northgate of Walnut Creek.

Isaiah Strayhorn (Eastlake, Chula Vista)
One of the top all-around backs in San Diego, Strayhorn blew up the Madison of San Diego defense with 234 yards on 18 carries and he scored three times as the Titans beat the Warhawks 32-20.

Lavell Thompson (South Gate)
Speedy back who rushed for over 2,000 yards as a junior and is the returning L.A. City Section Division II Offensive Player of the Year rushed for 234 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Rams’ 49-19 win over Franklin of Los Angeles.

Wilson Filikitonga (San Mateo)
He led the Bearcats past Mountain View 32-13 with 17 carries for 229 yards and three scores, one coming on an 80-yard play.

Adrian Petty (Christian, El Cajon)
The standout junior tied a state record held by many others when he broke a tackle and scored on a 99-yard run in Christian’s 55-7 win against Ontario Christian. Petty ended with 220 yards on just seven carries and scored three times. He also had one catch for 17 yards.

Hunter Simmons (Huntington Beach)
Drilling his way through the Moorpark defense, he rushed for 213 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries but the Oilers were unable to strike for their first win of the season as they lost to the Musketeers 51-49 after allowing a touchdown with 17 seconds remaining.

Robert Rivera (Delano)
He tied a school record by scoring five touchdowns on runs of 1, 80, 2, 3, 48 yards and had 172 yards on 14 carries as Delano beat North of Bakersfield 48-13. Curtis Thelkeld led North with 290 yards rushing on 21 carries and scored twice.

Sam Adams (Prospect, Saratoga)
Having a part in all seven of his team’s touchdowns, Adams completed 23 of his 36 pass attempts for 489 yards and six touchdowns while running for a score during a 45-33 win over Lynbrook of San Jose. In a few years, he can drink a Sam Adams to celebrate.

Luis Dorame (Monroe, North Hills)
Our SoCal Offensive Player of the Week passed for 459 yards and three touchdowns during a 27-21 win over Belmont of Los Angeles. The week before, Dorame passed for 412 yards and five touchdowns and for the season he has thrown for 1,303 yards and 11 scores.

Brandon Jones (Bakersfield Christian)
Stat star regular racked up a season-high 444 yards and four touchdowns through the air, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Eagles from losing their third straight game as they were on the losing end of a 49-42 final score against Ridgeview of Bakersfield.

Jake Browning (Folsom)
After two games in a row of not getting to play in the second half, Browning actually got to play one series after halftime during the Bulldogs’ 61-13 win against Burbank of Sacramento. He finished with 401 passing yards and seven touchdowns. If he averages seven TD passes per game for 16 games, well you do the math. That’s 112 and that’s not far-fetched for this team and this player. Three of Browning’s touchdowns went to Cole Thompson.

Matt Adamciewicz (Christopher, Gilroy)
He’s already over 1,000 yards for the season but his latest efforts weren’t enough in a 34-31 loss to Carmel. Adamciewicz completed 29 of 45 passes for 394 yars and three touchdowns.

Mason Randall (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton)
He completed 27 of his 34 pass attempts for 384 yards and three touchdowns during a 27-21 win by the Gators over Salinas. They improved to 3-0 and remained No. 2 in this week’s D3 North bowl game rankings.

Travis Waller (Servite, Anaheim)
We will be seeing Travis and the Friars this weekend against No. 2 De La Salle of Concord and he made sure they would be coming with a three-game winning streak. Waller passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 42-21 win over Edison of Huntington Beach. It’s so easy to see him running the offense at Oregon in a few years.

Sam Darnold (San Clemente)
While not known for his rushing, Darnold did run for 41 yards and one touchdown but it was through the air that this USC-committed signal caller did the most damage in San Clemente’s 49-20 win over previously unbeaten Atascadero. He completed 14 of his 16 pass attempts for 178 yards and five touchdowns for six TDs accounted for in all. Darnold recently committed to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January in San Antonio.

Max O’Rourke (Rocklin)
We charted him 15 of 25 for 315 yards and five TDs during Rocklin’s 47-6 win over Sacramento. O’Rourke also routinely booted the ball into the end zone for touchbacks, served as the punter and made all of his PATs until one got blocked. Teammate Blake Laurin caught three of the TD passes.

Angel Matute (Rancho Cucamonga)
A sophomore starter from last year, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Matute is a player to watch for the Cougars. In their 33-19 win last week against Murrieta Valley, he hit on 22 of 25 passes for 305 yards and one TD. He also added another TD on a rushing play.

Matt Corral (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village)
Just a freshman, he accounted for six touchdowns in the first half of a 61-13 win over Antelope Valley of Lancaster. Corral passed for 112 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for three more scores for the Lions.

Kamalii Akina (St. Francis, Mountain View)
While he came up just one completed pass short of earning a spot in our state record book, he became the third QB in school history to complete all of his passes in a game as he went 9 for 9 for 195 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-7 win over Skyline of Oakland.

RECEIVING

Tarnell Pollard (Prospect, Saratoga)
Already honored in our Le Boulanger South Bay/Peninsula Player of the Week program, Pollard had 11 catches for 355 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-33 win over Lynbrook of San Jose. The 355 yards is a new all-time single game record for the San Francisco Bay Area and CIF Central Coast Section. It isn’t that much higher than the previous school record of 294 yards set last year by Daniel Newson.

Jack Marren (Menlo School, Atherton)
While the Knights were outclassed in a 48-18 loss to Alvarez of Salinas, Marren wasn’t left barren as he caught 10 passes for 251 yards and two TDs. Menlo QB Dustin D’Ambra also went 21 of 45 for 353 yards and three scores.

Kaleb Fossum (El Toro, Lake Forest)
Trey Tinsley looked his way often in a 44-6 win over Norwalk as he caught 10 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Tinsley on the night was 18 of 29 for 332 yards and three scores.

Kyle Sweet (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM)
With the Eagles down early and big, he still stayed focused during a 41-10 loss to nationally ranked Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas. On the night, Sweet caught 10 passes for 199 yards.

Moses Ghiorso (Central Valley, Ceres)
Showing he’s a multi-threat talent, he caught four passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns, carried nine times for 123 yards and three touchdowns, recorded an interception while playing defense and also played some on special teams during a 40-27 win over Waterford.

Dejon Glover (Natomas, Sacramento)
The Glover fit the hands of the Nighthawks’ offense and defense in their 50-22 win against Highlands of North Highlands. The senior standout rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns, returned a punt 70 yards for a score (the second straight game he’s done that) and on defense he had six tackles, one sack and one interception.

Dominic Davis (Alemany, Mission Hills)
In addition to rushing for 211 yards (including a 55-yard TD), Davis sparked the Warriors in their 45-15 win against Dorsey of Los Angeles by intercepting a pass and racing 98 yards for another score. He has committed to Washington State.

Jacob Murrieta (Kennedy, Fremont)
Among the reported state leaders in sacks, he now has 15 on the year after four sacks during a 57-0 win over Hercules. He also caught two passes for 63 yards and one touchdown in the win.

Cedric Dashiell (Buena Park)
With a big performance against Esperanza of Anaheim in a 20-7 win that included 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks, he was named as the OC Sidelines Defensive Player of the Week.

Chrystian Harrigan (Gonzales)
His play at quarterback helped Gonzales snap a 17-game losing streak in a 55-9 romp past St. Francis Catholic of Watsonville. Harrigan completed 14 of 18 passes for 235 yards and three TDs. He also rushed 13 times for 188 yards and two other scores.

Quinten Pounds (Cypress)
Rushing for over the century mark in the Centurions’ 34-27 win over Troy of Fullerton, he finished with 161 yards rushing while also catching a touchdown pass and he scored on a 85-yard kickoff return.

Parker Chase (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach)
Our Cal-Hi Sports SoCal Defensive Player of the Week had 10 tackles, four sacks and recovered a fumble as the Sea Kings extended their winning streak to 30 games with a 28-18 win over Newport Harbor of Newport Beach.

Aundre Sherman (Buhach Colony, Atwater)
Named as an Athlete of the Week by BlackHatFootball, he played on both sides of the ball in the Thunder’s 24-21 win over Pacheco of Los Banos. Sherman caught an 81-yard touchdown pass, kicked three extra points and kicked the game-winning field goal from 45 yards out.

Aaron Matthews (JSerra, San Juan Capistrano)
Named by OCVarsity as its Defensive Player of the Week, Matthews had a sack and recovered a fumble in their win against St. Bonaventure of Ventura. He also rushed for 68 yards and one score.

Andrew Robinson (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton)
Playing on both sides of the line of scrimmage, it was on defense where Robinson made the biggest impact during the Gators’ 27-21 win over Salinas as he recorded 15 tackles and a broke up a pass. He was named as one of our Le Boulanger South Bay/Peninsula Players of the Week.

As has been customary for many years, we collect the state stat stars in support of the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac. The book has been published seven times (the most recent, though, was 2009) and is as official as a state record book can be since no other exists.
