With the proliferation of the spread offense and similar offenses designed to score frequently and quickly, the number of times a team has scored 50 points in a California high school football game and has not won has gone up dramatically in recent years. The 2013 season was no exception. Here is a look at the 10 craziest games we came across while updating totals for the Cal-Hi Sports state record book.

Hart (Newhall) 55, Chaminade (West Hills) 54 (OT)
Brady White led the Indians by going 36 of 53 for 490 yards and seven TDs. Hart’s Connor Wingenroth also put his name into the state record book with a state record-tying 99-yard run. In the first OT, White threw a TD pass to Wes Fitzpatrick. Chaminade then went for the win on a two-point conversion after a TD pass from Brad Kaaya to Dymond Lee, but the play was stopped. Chaminade had the last laugh as the Eagles ended up beating Hart 28-10 in a rematch for the CIF SoCal D2 South bowl game crown and then won the CIF D2 state bowl game. Kaaya passed for 370 yards and three TDs in the first matchup.

Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana) 62, Laguna Beach 56 (OT)
This one has to rank high because the score at the end of regulation was 56-56. Imagine what could have been? 76-76 and still going? Too bad Laguna Beach couldn’t score in the overtime to match the Eagles. Nathan Lancaster of the Breakers set an Orange County record with 30 carries for 552 yards and seven TDs. Danny Mattero of Calvary Chapel passed for 505 yards and five scores.

Centennial (Corona) 86, Upland 56
This was the most points scored by one team for one game in the state from last season. It was kind of funny that a few weeks later the same team lost 70-49 in a similar outing against eventual CIF Open Division state champ St. John Bosco in a game that wasn’t as close as the score would indicate. With Tre Watson rushing for 519 yards on 40 carries, Centennial set a state single-game total offense record against Upland with 943 yards. Junior QB Tyler Hilinski kept the Highlanders close with 429 yards through the air and seven TD passes.

Sierra (Manteca) 61, Chavez (Stockton) 58
This was the most points scored by a losing team in the state last season. The Titans in defeat were led by Julius Davila, who passed for 494 yards and seven touchdowns. The game was tied at 58-58 before Josh Gonzalez trotted onto the field and booted a 20-yard field goal with 10 seconds left. Jake Pruitt of Sierra, who later threw for 496 yards and five TDs in a win against Sonora, hit on 35 of 45 in this game for 401 yards and six TDs. The combined 13 TD passes for the one game fell one short of the state record.

Centennial (Corona) 69, St. Bonaventure (Ventura) 55
This was the final game of the San Diego U-T Honor Bowl at Oceanside and featured Centennial running back Tre Watson with 468 yards rushing on 37 carries. He also scored seven times and the two teams combined for more than 1,300 yards. It was a case of St. Bonaventure junior QB Ricky Town and his offense nearly matching the explosive Huskies’ on each possession. QB Robert Webber also had a strong game for Centennial, one of many he had in two years as the ringleader of head coach Matt Logan’s spread option offense.

Manteca 69, Central Valley (Ceres) 55
The Buffaloes eventually won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV title and lost in a heartbreaker to Enterprise of Redding in the D2 NorCal bowl game. To get there, though, they had to survive a monster game from Central Valley running back Jaquan Gardner in the first round of the section playoffs. Gardner rushed for 378 yards and scored four times to keep Central Valley in it. With Manteca leading 62-55 in the final minutes, Central Valley was threatening before Chase McKee picked up a fumble and ran it back 69 yards for the clinching score.

San Fernando 76, Verdugo Hills (Tujunga) 44
These two teams combined for 1,330 total yards and it resembled a mano-a-mano showdown between Cristian Solano of the Tigers and Mark Powell of the Dons. Solano passed for 373 yards and six TDs and rushed for 175 yards and three more scores. Powell passed for 382 yards and four TDs and rushed for 159 yards and two additional scores. Solano ended up leading San Fernando to a 14-0 record and the CIF L.A. City Section D2 title. He is now a freshman at the University of Nevada.

Porterville 80, Mt. Whitney (Visalia) 54
Coach Carl Scudder’s team at Porterville is getting a huge reputation for being in these types of games. He’s not using the usual spread, no-huddle, pass-crazy system, either. He’s using a variation of the Wing T. Two years ago, the Panthers beat Tulare 86-79 in the highest scoring game for two teams in state history. In this game, Porterville got a 97-yard kickoff return by Andomo Rader to open the game. Mt. Whitney’s Chris Angulo returned the favor to start the second half. The Panthers also won a game last season 66-52 over Dinuba.

Pacific Grove 77, Carmel 53
This was a CIF Central Coast Section Division IV semifinal game and was a rematch of Monterey County rivals who annually meet in what is known as the Shoe Game. Carmel won 40-35 to end the regular season in a matchup of teams that were unbeaten but Pacific Grove avenged in the playoffs. Although the Breakers would later lose to Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton in the section final, they fired on all cylinders in this game. Jake Speed scored six times and rushed for 201 yards. Connor Marden passed for 289 yards and rushed for 88 yards to lead Carmel.

Crescenta Valley (La Crescenta) 56, San Marino 53
Kevin Hello’s blocked punt that he recovered in the end zone for a touchdown was probably the biggest play for the Falcons in this scorefest. They also got a huge game from QB Brian Gadsby, who passed for 463 yards and six touchdowns. San Marino’s Carson Glazier threw for three TDs in the second half, the last one to Tyler Spitzer with 2:25 left. The Titans could not recover and onside kick, however, enabling Crescenta Valley to run out the clock.

Although not nearly as high scoring as these games, California’s 31-28 come from behind victory at Monte Vista last year where Grizzly QB Cameron Owen practically single handedly pulled this one out for Cal High.
i guess you had to have games where the defense was a joke
