Since the end of the spring baseball and softball seasons, several top coaches have announced their retirements, which is always helpful for our state record compiling because when they do their totals are usually mentioned as well.

For a little more than two months anyway, all of the state coaching records for the five primary sports that are covered on the CalHiSports.com web site – football, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball, softball – are now completely up-to-date.
The football totals, of course, will begin to change as soon as scores start rolling in with the first games of the 2014 season in late August.
Highlights from the just completed update of the baseball coaching leader list shows Guy Anderson from Cordova of Rancho Cordova now at more than 900 career wins with Walter “Spud” O’Neil of Lakewood now sitting at 800 exactly.
Baseball coaches who have announced their retirements at the end of the season so far include John Romano from Nogales of La Puente (635 wins) and Rich Remkus from Gladstone of Covina (609 wins).
For softball, Tony Dobra of San Pedro has said he will be stepping down. He retires with 728 wins, third most in state history, plus 23 league championships in 34 seasons.
Another of the state’s top softball coaches retiring is Huntington Beach Marina’s Shelly Luth. She leaves the program with a career record of 476-250-3 in 23 seasons.
