OPEN DIVISION/DIVISION I
Andre Chevalier (Sierra Canyon, Chatsworth)

The overall State Coach of the Year is also always the state coach of the year for a division. Chevalier’s team won the CIF D1 state title, which also was the third of his coaching career. Senior Bryce James, the second son of NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James to play for Chevalier along with Bronny James between 2020 to 2023, was a key member of this year’s team. Besides junior Maxi Adams, other leaders of the 2025 Trailblazers were senior Gavin Hightower and senior Bryce Cofield.

Last 15 honorees: 2024 Matt Dunn (Bellflower St. John Bosco); 2023 Mike Hansen (San Ramon Dougherty Valley); 2022 Mike LeDuc (La Verne Damien); 2021 Josh Giles (Corona Centennial); 2020 Dave Rebibo (Studio City Harvard-Westlake); 2019 Jonas Honick (Ross Branson); 2018 Dave Kleckner (Etiwanda); 2017 Steve Singleton (Eastvale Roosevelt); 2016 Russell White (Encino Crespi); 2015 Dave Kleckner (Etiwanda); 2014 Nick Jones (Danville Monte Vista); 2013 James Hecht (Santa Monica); 2012 Tony Amundsen (Fresno Bullard); 2011 Gary McKnight (Santa Ana Mater Dei); 2010 Reggie Morris Jr. (Lawndale Leuzinger).

DIVISION II
Garrett Brown (Bakersfield Christian)

Since CIF D2 state championship head coach Tim Kelly from Jesuit of Carmichael has been chosen as the D2 State Coach of the Year before (just five years ago) and we only honor a coach more than once unless he/she also might be the overall State Coach of the Year, we needed to look for other worthy candidates. Rocklin’s Steve Taylor, whose team topped Jesuit in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D2 final, also has been selected before (2009).

Looking deeper, we went with Brown. He was almost the D2 State Coach of the Year for 2020 when his team at Bakersfield Christian won the CIF SoCal D2 regional title and didn’t get to play for a state title due to COVID. That was Garrett’s first season as head coach at Bakersfield Christian, however, and we also usually look for more experienced honorees. He’s got a burgeoning track record five seasons later and the time is now.

Since that 2020 season, Brown has guided the Eagles to the CIF Central Section D2 title in 2021 and 2022. He also picked up his 100th career win last season with a 63-57 win against South of Bakersfield. This year’s team didn’t win a D2 section title once again, but that was more about moving up to D1. Once the Eagles were back at D2 for the SoCal regional playoffs, they ramped it up with wins against Oak Park, Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach and Poly of Sun Valley to reach the D2 regional final. The road then ended with a loss to Chatsworth, which is a team from the CIF L.A. City Section Open Division.

Brown’s squad posted a 24-9 final record this season to go with 21-12, 22-10 and 22-10 and 27-6 in his other seasons after the pandemic. The Eagles also haven’t lost a league title since Brown came onboard six years ago and that streak is now up to eight years in a row.

Last 15 honorees: 2024 Karega Hart (Oakland Tech); 2023 Steve Garrett (Las Flores Tesoro); 2022 Yousef Etemadi (Tustin Foothill); 2021 Tim Kelly (Carmichael Jesuit); 2020 Jeff Staniland (Oxnard); 2019 Jerry DeFabiis (Colony, Ontario); 2018 Ryan Bailey (Los Angeles Brentwood); 2017 Mark Hill (Anaheim Esperanza); 2016 Michael Booker (El Cerrito); 2015 Chuck Rapp (San Mateo Serra); 2014 Mike Wall (Folsom); 2013 Reggie Morris Jr. (Redondo Beach Redondo Union); 2012 Patrick Roy (Inglewood); 2011 Dan Larson (Ventura); 2010 Jason Bryant (San Diego Lincoln).

DIVISION III
Cameron Bradford
(The King’s Academy, Sunnyvale)

It was a breakthrough season for Bradford and the Knights, who won the CIF Central Coast Section D4 title with a 66-63 triumph over Carmel and was followed by CIF NorCal D3 playoff victories against Pleasant Valley of Chico, Aptos, Carlmont of Belmont and Palo Alto. They fell in a one-point game to San Gabriel Academy, 52-51, in the CIF D3 state final. The 27-5 Knights also split in games played against CIF D4 state champion Priory of Portola Valley.

This was the fifth season for Bradford as head coach at King’s Academy. His squad two years ago posted a 24-4 record, won a CCS title and lost to eventual CIF D3 state champ Oakland High in the CIF NorCal regional semifinals. The Knights were 17-8 last year, 17-9 in 2021-22 and 10-5 in that short spring 2021 season when the state was coming out of the pandemic and also which was Cameron’s first season.

Bradford previously coached girls teams at Presentation of San Jose and also has some experience coaching football at Gunn High (Palo Alto). His ties to the South Bay also go back to his own days at Valley Christian High in San Jose. He was a team captain for the Warriors in both football and basketball and both teams won CCS titles. His coaching and organizational skills also are most importantly used in his main job, which is serving as an area manager for the San Francisco/Silicon Valley region for Northern California Special Olympics.

Last 15 honorees: 2024 Tim Amundsen (Fresno Bullard); 2023 Orlando Watkins (Oakland); 2022 David Galley (Venice); 2021 Don Dumas (Chula Vista Bonita Vista); 2020 Rich Buckner (Berkeley St. Mary’s); 2019 Randy Bessolo (San Francisco University); 2018 Tim Keating (Chico Pleasant Valley); 2017 Arnold Zelaya (San Francisco Mission); 2016 David Brigante (Santa Barbara); 2015 Matt Dunn (La Verne Damien); 2014 Todd Wolfson (West Hills Chaminade); 2013 Mike Haupt (San Diego St. Augustine); 2012 Tim Tucker (Pasadena); 2011 Eric Cooper Sr. (La Verne Lutheran); 2010 Dwan Hurt (Gardena Serra); 2009 Jim Harris Sr. (Huntington Beach Ocean View).

DIVISION IV
David Moseley (Priory, Portola Valley)

With the Final Four slated for next weekend, it’s appropriate the Moseley is capturing one of this year’s statewide coaching honors. He is a former player at Stanford who was on Stanford’s 1998 team with twins Jason and Jarron Collins. Moseley also was a captain at Stanford and also was a teammate of current Cal head coach Mark Madsen along with current Golden State Warriors’ assistant coach Kris Weems. Jarron Collins is an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Moseley’s team won the CIF D4 state title, which was the first in school history, with an 83-66 victory in the state final over Fresno Christian. The Panthers were a balanced squad that had different scoring leaders in the regional playoffs, including Mate Palotai, Balazs Nyikos, Teddy Xanthopolous and Jai Gerrodette.

The first season for Moseley at the school was 2008-09. He has led the school to league success, but not statewide until this season. He also had statewide success in New Mexico as a player where he was the Gatorade State Player of the Year there in 1996.

It hasn’t been as easy as it looked this season for Priory to land its state title. The Panthers lost two players to transfer recently in Ryder Bush and Nes Emeneke (both starters for NorCal Open Division champ Archbishop Riordan).

Moseley also is the third straight CIF Central Coast Section winner of the D4 State Coach of the Year honor. He follows Greg Daniels of Monterey from last season and John Parsons of Half Moon Bay for 2023. Daniels also won the CIF D4 state title but Parsons’ team lost in the final.

Last 15 honorees: 2024 Greg Daniels (Monterey); 2023 John Parsons (Half Moon Bay); 2022 Brock Flint (San Diego Scripps Ranch); 2021 Terry Tucker (San Ysidro); 2020 Luke Williams (Stockton Brookside Christian); 2019 Danny O’Fallon (Los Angeles Roybal Learning Center); 2018 Kraig Clifton (San Andreas Calaveras); 2017 Derek Walker (Vallejo St. Patrick-St. Vincent); 2016 J.J. Prince (Calabasas Viewpoint); 2015 Russell White (Encino Crespi); 2014 Doug Mitchell (Torrance Bishop Montgomery); 2013 Tom Bonfigli (Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman); 2012 Bill Mellis (Richmond Salesian); 2011 Miguel Villegas (Los Angeles Windward); 2010 Manny Nodar (Berkeley St. Mary’s).

DIVISION V
Paul Cortes (International, San Francisco)

Similar to David Moseley for D4, Paul has great coaching experience under his belt, guided his team to a CIF state title and hasn’t been a state coach of the year before. One year after the Jaguars advanced to the CIF NorCal D5 regional semifinals and lost by just 60-57 to eventual state winner Athenian of Danville, they went the distance two weeks ago and rolled past Diamond Ranch of Pomona, 71-52.

It was mentioned during the post-game press conference that International had joined a strong group of teams from San Francisco that have won CIF state titles before, including Stuart Hall in D5 just three years ago. Cortes said he had a lot of help from Stuart Hall’s Charles Johnson (the 2022 State D5 Coach of the Year) in preparing for the final games this season.

Cortes, who has been the head coach at International since the 2016-17 season, has won four Bay Counties League Central titles and has had teams in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs five times. He began his coaching career after being hired as a Recreation Leader for the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department in 2011. He’s been a coach with the Bay City Warriors club program since 2012 and has been an assistant basketball coach at Gateway of San Francisco and at Jewish Community High School by the Bay.

Last 15 honorees: 2024 Jared Gibson (Tujunga Verdugo Hills); 2023 Ryan Watt (Tollhouse Sierra); 2022 Charles Johnson (San Francisco Stuart Hall); 2021 Alfonso Alvarado (Fowler); 2020 Mike Fulton (San Anselmo San Domenico); 2019 Donovan Blythe (East Palo Alto Eastside College Prep); 2018 James Mosley (Canyon Country Santa Clarita Christian); 2017 Robbie Robinson (Riverside Notre Dame); 2016 Don Lippi (Alameda St. Joseph Notre Dame); 2015 John Maffucci (Carlsbad Army-Navy); 2014 Sid Cooke (La Canada Renaissance Academy); 2013 Kevin McCloskey (San Gabriel Academy); 2012 Jon Shaw (Sun Valley Village Christian); 2011 Mike Jarvis (Vacaville Christian); 2010 Ed Kelly (Watsonville St. Francis CCC).
