Boys/Girls BB State Teams of Year 2025

We’re doing a combo post for the final State Teams of the Year honors since both teams — Roosevelt of Eastvale boys and Etiwanda girls — are from the Inland Empire and are only about 16 miles apart. It’s not the first time that the Inland Empire has swept the two big final No. 1 rankings but it’s the first time that it’s happened after both won CIF state titles.

Note: We hope you enjoy this free post on CalHiSports.com. This week’s final state rankings in all divisions boys and girls, expanded overall final rankings and some of our exclusive upcoming all-state teams (including juniors, sophomores and frosh) will be for Gold Club members only. Driving between Roosevelt High in Eastvale and Etiwanda High near Rancho Cucamonga would only be about 16 miles going on Interstate 15. That might be a small distance in miles, but the two schools located in the Inland Empire region of Southern California are much farther removed from other schools in California that have boys and girls basketball teams.

Both the Mustangs’ boys and Eagles’ girls captured the coveted CIF Open Division state titles last Saturday in Sacramento and now both have been officially named as the 2025 Cal-Hi Sports State Team of the Year. They join all-time lists that go back to the early 1970s for girls and back to the early 1900s for boys.

The Inland Empire sweep of the CIF Open Division state playoffs has never happened before, but the State Team of the Year honors did happen just four years ago in 2021 and by the same school, Roosevelt’s big rival from Centennial of Corona. That was the second year of COVID, however, and the CIF state championships were not held after being cancelled at the last-second in 2020. Centennial won the CIF Southern Section top divisional title for both genders and the Huskies’ boys got some help when unbeaten Torrey Pines of San Diego lost in the SoCal regional final to the Etiwanda boys.

Saturday night’s sweep of CIF Open state titles for the Inland Empire began when the Eagles’ girls won their third straight crown with a 75-59 triumph against Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. This also abviously would be three straight State Team of the Year finishes.

While there have been some four-peats in CIF state title game history and a few more three-peats, the accomplishment by head coach Stan Delus’ program of being State Team of the Year three times in a row has only been matched by one other school and that would be Mater Dei of Santa Ana for 2010, 2011 and 2012. There are a few more that have been honored two years in a row with the most significant being Poly of Riverside for 1979 & 1980 led by the legendary Cheryl Miller and Morningside of Inglewood for 1989 and 1990 led by legendary Lisa Leslie.

The IE had never had a State Team of the Year for boys hoops until unbeaten Chino Hills in 2016 with the Ball brothers — Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo — and future Mr. Basketball Onyeka Okongwu. Centennial then won for 2021 and followed it up with full statewide No. 1 finish, including CIF playoffs for 2022.

“What he has done is unbelievable,” Roosevelt head coach Stephen Singleton said of Delus. “To lose that CIF championship game to Ontario Christian, but to get the girls locked in, get back and beat them, then get back here and do what they did tonight is huge. I have the utmost respect for him. It’s a special night for the Inland Empire.”

Singleton also was asked on Saturday about being in the same league and same school district as Centennial.

“Centennial is great competition in the league, but we went across the country the last two years to get where we wanted to be,” he said. “I schedule us to be battle-tested. Every tournament we were in, we won. These guys work hard as heck to get their work in at practice.”

Both coaches also credited having to go through the CIF Southern Section Open Division pool play-formatted playoffs to get to the end and raising the Open state title plaque.

“You have to go through at least four of the top national teams to get here,” Delus said. “That’s what has made it so much more special. It’s not like you’re getting through a couple of teams.”

Roosevelt’s top finish also is another feather in the cap for the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Last fall, Centennial was the State Public School of the Year for football. Last June, Corona High was the State Team of the Year in baseball. Centennial’s girls were No. 1 in 2021 and Norco High in softball (currently No. 2 in the state) has been State Team of the Year more than once.

And another note: Roosevelt’s 35 wins ties the Inland Empire mark of 35 that Chino Hills got in its 35-0 season from 2016. The state record for most wins in one season for boys hoops is still at 39, set by a touring team from Lodi High way back in 1917 that had a 39-7 record.
