CalHiSports.com (Cal-Hi Sports) is the exclusive home of the California State Record Book. We started compiling these team and individual records in five core sports in 1969 when co-founder Nelson Tennis began looking them up as a hobby. Below are our updated state record listings that we constantly update in five core sports. We have tons of other listings we are currently working on and records for other sports that we published in our Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac, which was last published as a hard copy in 2009.
There is no need to go into the deep history or the origins of Cal-Hi Sports. You can find that info by CLICKING HERE. Just know co-founder Nelson Tennis started compiling state records in 1969, in 1975 he decided to write up a collection of state football rankings and made up the name, “Cal-Hi Sports,” to go with those rankings and in 1979 he and his nephew, co-founder Mark Tennis, decided to create a business starting out with a weekly newsletter than later morphed into publishing a monthly magazine (with publisher Andy Bark) and publishing the Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book & Almanac.
That almanac has seven editions, with the latest one published in 2009. We’ll eventually publish an eighth edition, but it might not have the ridiculously deep lists in every sport that the seventh edition did and we might even do it by core sport as a handbook. Nowadays, nobody wants to lug around a 400-page book like they did a generation or two ago.
That’s how long we’ve been around.
On May 23, 2004, 67-year-old Nelson Tennis died due to complications of bladder cancer. Since around that time on various platforms, we’ve published the online state record book and it will continue to be updated online in his honor. Below you’ll find the state record book listings we have updated and various alumni lists.
The exclusive California state records on the website are also permanently listed on the homepage on the blue navigation bar drop-down tab named “Record Book” separated by sport. On the blue navigation bar tab named “All-State” is where our readers can view all of our previous all-state teams over the years. Our final state rankings back to 1975 are available to view and research under the “Rankings” tab.
We continue to add various all-state squads and state record book categories each season. We recently added retroactive all-state teams in boys basketball dating back to 1954-55 and retroactive all-state football teams back to 1960. We’ll continue to add details and previously published player write-ups to every all-state team we’ve ever published, plus many supplemental teams as well.
