The selections for the 42nd annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Teams goes on and today it’s those from medium & small schools. It’s more confusing as ever as which is large, medium & small thanks to competitive equity based playoffs but we have been doing these teams for a long time. Both the small schools and medium schools have a first and second team all-state and remember these are position specific. The final, overall all-state teams are still to come.

Two of the most prominent players who were going to be on this year’s All-State Medium Schools baseball teams heard their names called during Sunday night’s MLB Draft held in Fort Worth, Texas.
It wasn’t in the first round, but with the 36th pick in CB Round A the Cleveland Guardians selected right-handed pitching prospect Braylon Doughty from Chaparral High of Temecula. Then with the 52nd pick (second round) it was Boston Bateman’s turn as the Camarillo High standout was taken by the San Diego Padres.
Bateman already had been named as the Medium Schools State Player of the Year and was the third highest player from the state chosen in this year’s MLB Draft. Doughty was second while the first was Senior State Player of the Year Bryce Rainer from Harvard-Westlake of Studio City.
Doughty comes from a Chaparral program that plays in a large school league, but it was in the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs, which qualifies Puma players as medium schools.
Bateman was joined on the all-state Medium Schools honors (second team) by teammate Nick Tostado, who also helped the Scorpions win the CIFSS D4 championship.
Obviously, we still have the top 30 overall first team all-state selections to get out so the honors for Doughty and Bateman from us are still not quite done.
The only school with more players on medium schools was D2 State Team of the Year Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa. The Cardinals have juniors Jack Pezzolo and Josh Jannicelli on first team and senior Sam Valenti on second team.
For the all-state small schools honors, the only school with three players named was D4 State Team of the Year Bradshaw Christian of Sacramento. All three for the Pride — catcher Landon Carter, infielder Micah Nicholson and pitcher/hitter David Wiser — also are all on first team.
Liberty of Madera Ranchos was one of three other schools to have two on all-state small schools and both McGuire Smith and Hudson Groh are on first team.
Final Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Some teams that were D2 for the rankings were considered large and some considered medium. We don’t have anyone from CIFSS D1 or D2 team in medium, but there are some from D3. Those that were in Division III state rankings were all medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools and seniors are eligible.
