State Stat Stars of the Week

Baseball’s best this week includes legendary head coach Spud O’Neil of Lakewood (moved up to No. 2 on an all-time state list). Softball’s best includes slugger Taylor Shumaker of Anaheim Esperanza (10 homers). Photos: the562.org & DugoutChatter.com.

This feature serves as our statewide collection of milestone achievements in California high school sports. More than lists and numbers, we can provide historical context since we’ve maintained state records in California for more than 40 years. One basketball milestone from last week’s CIF state finals we hadn’t figured out yet was boys/girls combo titles and Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) is now No. 2 on that all-time list. For baseball, we have Lakewood’s Spud O’Neil moving to No. 2 on the all-time state career list for coaching wins. In softball, we have been called demented before but this week we have Khamara Dement of Selma with back-to-back two-homer games.
