We have had to do another run through of the state’s leading D1 Class of 2025 prospects for football heading into the 2023 season. The big news is that the No. 1 player had been Davon Mitchell, a transfer from Allen High in Texas, but he has reclassified to Class of 2024. State Sophomore Player of the Year Jordon Davison has moved back up to first, but some of his teammates at Mater Dei also are near the top. With Mitchell gone, just about everyone has moved up.

Note: We also have player rankings for boys basketball and just did a run through of all classes from 2023 to 2026. All player ranking charts (past and present since 2013) are for Gold Club members only. This is a great time to sign up and you can get all of our content for just $3.99 for one month. Can it be true that an elite football player from one of the top schools in Texas would transfer to a school in Southern California and the competition is better?

Well, if you are considering all of the teams that played in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs last season and that the player in question is going to one of them, then the answer is yes.

That player is 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end Davon Mitchell. He was previously listed as the top-ranked tight end for the Class of 2025 in the nation and transferred earlier this year from Allen High of Allen, Texas, to Los Alamitos. Mitchell also had been pegged to start the 2023 season as the top-ranked junior in the state, according to the Cal-Hi Sports HOT 100 player rankings and also two of the three major recruiting networks.
