The biggest SoCal & NorCal games of the week were on Saturday with No. 5 Centennial of Corona and No. 7 Folsom both recording big wins. With No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and No. 3 Servite (Anaheim) both idle this week, the big winners on Friday in matchups between two top 25 squads were Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), Mission Viejo and Lincoln (San Diego).

Note: Look for a brand new State Top 50 set of football rankings that won’t simply be a list on Monday. We’ll have insights and breakdowns based on more than 40 years of going to Friday night games with an overview of the state’s top teams and what’s coming up that just can’t be matched. It’s more than 8,000 words of jam-packed info. Each new set of rankings will be for Gold Club members only. The late Friday/Weekend Scoreboards will continue to be free posts and will provide snippets of info, comments and more.

(Rankings based on State Top 50 released last Monday)
(Through reported results of Friday, Sept. 3)

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 1-0
Did not play. The Monarchs had one of their byes that couldn’t be filled. They will play next week at the Polynesian Football Classic in Las Vegas vs. Liberty (Henderson, Nev.).

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 3-0
Defeated Bishop Amat (La Puente) 47-7. The visiting Lancers had a tough time with the Bosco offense after it was held to unusually low 24 points in previous outing. Running back Jabari Bates rushed for 175 yards and three TDs.

3. Servite (Anaheim) 2-0
Did not play. After wins vs. Edison of Huntington Beach and Mission Viejo, the Friars have a bye this week. They will face Bishop Amat (La Puente) next Thursday in a rescheduled matchup from Week 0.

4. De La Salle (Concord) 2-0
Defeated Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) 68-6. Charles Greer returned the opening kickoff for a 69-yard touchdown as the Spartans roared out of the gates fast (which is what they didn’t do in first game).

5. Centennial (Corona) 2-0
Defeated No. 6 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 35-14 on Saturday at the Honor Bowl. Junior Jayson Cortes rushed for 216 yards and three TDs, but it was a 59-yard TD run by sophomore Cornell Hatcher in the third quarter that broke a 14-14 tie. The Centennial defense also kept getting 3-and-outs in the second half that was a huge factor.

6. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 2-1
LOST to No. 5 Centennial (Corona) 35-14 on Saturday. Sophomore LB Carmel Crunk scored on a interception return just before halftime that tied the score. Most of the Trailblazers’ defensive secondary was out in the second half, but to all at the game the offensive line needed to create more room in the running game to match what Centennial was doing.

7. Folsom 3-0
Defeated No. 11 Pittsburg 38-17 on Saturday. The move to Saturday from Friday was because the Bulldogs had a game last Monday night vs. Jesuit of Carmichael. QB Tyler Tremain continued his outstanding season with five TD passes to five different receivers. On Oct. 1, Folsom will host De La Salle.

8. Norco 3-0
Playing Rancho Cucamonga 62-28. The Cougars clobbered a Rancho Cucamonga squad that had won its opener against Apple Valley (a team that beat Murrieta Valley on Friday). To put it more simple: impressive.

9. Los Alamitos 3-0
Defeated Paramount 50-0. So far, the Griffins have a blowout, a close game (vs. San Diego Lincoln) and a blowout. The pattern may continue next Friday at state-ranked Buchanan in a game we will attend.

10. Serra (San Mateo) 1-0
Defeated Palo Alto 41-14. It was 41-0 at halftime before the Vikings scored twice in the second half vs. second-stringers.

11. Pittsburg 0-1
LOST to No. 7 Folsom 38-17 on Saturday. The Pirates just couldn’t quite get over the hump against the Bulldogs.

12. Carlsbad 3-0
Defeated Lawndale 30-7. More San Diego Section media members may vote for Cathedral Catholic to be No. 1 instead of the Lancers, but that’s more about what the Dons did on Friday in their game. Carlsbad got a solid win in its game.

13. Chaminade (West Hills) 2-1
LOST to No. 14 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 50-17. The only highlights for the Eagles was some early passing success from junior QB Indiana Wijay to senior WR Josh Mailander.

14. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 2-1
Defeated No. 13 Chaminade (West Hills) 50-17. Head coach Sean Doyle loves to have his school host the Honor Bowl and Friday the Dons were not nice to the Eagles. The offense with QB Charlie Mirer and RB Lucky Sutton had 554 yards and the defense led by Cal-bound DE Jaxson Moi (3 sacks) shut down everything after Chaminade had taken a 10-7 lead in the first half.

15. Alemany (Mission Hills) 0-2
Did not play. Head coach Casey Clausen’s squad actually moved up the rankings following a 24-3 loss to No. 2 St. John Bosco (historically pretty good vs. the Braves). Alemany’s next game is showing as Sept. 10 next week vs. Oaks Christian.

16. San Clemente 3-0
Playing La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) 13-6. Second-straight low-scoring win for the Tritons, who probably will drop at least two positions in the next rankings.

17. Clovis 3-0
Defeated Ridgeview (Bakersfield) 40-0. With 12 starters out due to COVID contact tracing (including QB Nathan Johnson), the Cougars still rolled. QB Jackson Kloster threw for three TDs.

18. Mission Viejo 2-1
Defeated No. 24 Long Beach Poly 41-14. Similar to Cathedral Catholic’s win over Chaminade that exemplified how good Corona Centennial might be this season, the Diablos impressed against the Jackrabbits after they lost 44-7 to No. 3 Servite.

19. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 2-1
LOST to No. 22 Lincoln (San Diego) 30-13. The Grizzlies could only muster two scores in 12 possessions (according to SD Union-Tribune) against Lincoln’s speedy, tenacious defense.

20. Buchanan (Clovis) 3-0
Defeated Paso Robles 48-0 on Thursday. Caden Rodgers scored four touchdowns for the Bears, who’ve only given up one TD in their first three games. That defense will be severely tested next Friday when Los Alamitos comes to town for a visit that we are planning to attend.

21. Lutheran (Orange) 3-0
Defeated Edison (Huntington Beach) 23-21. A late field goal won it for the Lancers.

22. Lincoln (San Diego) 2-1
Defeated No. 19 Mission Hills (San Marcos) 30-13. Rodrick Robinson piled up 122 yards on 24 carries and had three TDs plus Jalil Tucker bolted for an 80-yard kickoff return that completed the scoring. That loss to No. 9 Los Alamitos looks even better.

23. Serra (Gardena) 1-2
LOST to American Fork (Utah) 59-27 on Saturday at Honor Bowl. The Cavs scored three times in the first half and were tied at 21-21 with 49 seconds before halftime. That was still enough time for the Cavemen to score for a 28-21 lead and then they took control in the third quarter with an opening score, then a pick six and then another TD after a fumbled kickoff.

24. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 0-2
LOST to No. 18 Mission Viejo 41-14. The Jackrabbits were down 14-7 at halftime and cut it to 28-14 after a pick six in the third quarter. It was all Diablos after that.

25. Central (Fresno) 2-0
Defeated Bakersfield 59-20. This score was similar to the margin that Drillers lost by in their first game to No. 9 Los Alamitos.

TEAMS ON THE BUBBLE

Bishop Amat (La Puente) 1-1
LOST to No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 44-7.

Damien (La Verne) 1-1
Defeated St. Francis (La Canada) 42-17. QB Dylan Gutierrez threw for two TDs and rushed for two TDs.

Inglewood 3-0
Defeated Compton 52-6. QB Justyn Martin threw for four TDs.

Loyola (Los Angeles) 2-1
Defeated Culver City 62-21. Junior RB Tahj Owens led the way with five TDs.

Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 0-3
LOST to Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) 30-7. Losing to the No. 1 team in Colorado isn’t going to hurt the Lions in the rankings. That first loss to Chaminade (which just lost 50-17 to Cathedral Catholic) will hurt more.

Rocklin 2-0
Defeated Davis 69-8. The Thunder leading the Blue Devils 62-0 at halftime may have been one of the most shocking scores of the night.

San Ramon Valley (Danville) 1-0
Defeated Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) 34-7. Tyler Hoffman led the Wolves on defense with four sacks.

Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 2-1
Defeated St. Augustine (San Diego) 39-10.

St. Mary’s (Stockton) 0-2
LOST to Central Catholic (Modesto) 41-27. Rams’ starting QB Cruz Herrera was out with an injury.

Valencia 1-0
Defeated Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 49-20. Tyler Voss had four TD passes, one TD run.

Valley Christian (San Jose) 2-0
Defeated Capital Christian (Sacramento) 40-19.

Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) 2-1W
Defeated Tesoro (Las Flores) 48-21. Broncos (loss was to Norco) rushed for 411 yards.

Sorry but Pitt isn’t going to be No. 2. Serra SM clobbered them last time they played and beat St. Francis 49-7 a few months ago.
