Fantag Games: Union Mine girls, Folsom boys, Bear Creek girls win

Click on the link after each game recap to see video highlights from each of these three Fantag Games of the Week. For this fourth week, we have recaps and video highlights from two huge league games (Sierra Valley Conference girls, Sierra Foothill League boys) plus a non-league matchup between two of the leading girls teams in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

Wednesday, Jan. 23 (Girls)
Union Mine (El Dorado) 57, Bradshaw Christian (Sacramento) 52

The host Diamondback girls were looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Pride in the Sierra Valley Conference and force a tie atop the league standings. They did as both 6-foot-2 center Carley Zaragoza and 5-foot-9 forward Alli McDonald had solid games. Zaragoza led the way with 20 points while McDonald chipped in with 14. When both of those two are playing and playing well, Union Minem (14-7) can be hard to beat. Bradshaw Christian (11-12), which has played one of the toughest schedules in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section, got 23 points in another strong outing from Anaya Mejia. Senior guard Cookie Marques also checked in with double-figures with 13 points. Both teams won later in the week and remained tied for first in league heading into this week.

Friday, Jan. 25 (Boys)
Folsom 77, Rocklin 65

While the Bulldogs (19-5) have slipped a bit in some of their showcase games, including a recent loss to College Park of Pleasant Hill, they haven’t slipped at all in the Sierra Foothill League. They were looking to take a two-game lead in league standings last Friday at Rocklin and impressed with a 12-point victory. Rocklin, which was in a Fantag Game of the Week at Whitney of Rocklin the previous Friday, had a tough time dealing with 6-foot-5, 245-pound grid-hooper DeShawn Lynch on the inside. Lynch had 22 points and drew constant double teams that freed up Folsom’s outside shooters. One of those shooters, Tiler Fears, led all scorers with 26 points. Folsom started this week at 19-5 overall, 6-0 in league. Rocklin (21-3, 4-2) was led by Cory Gohl with 19 points.

Monday, Jan. 28 (Girls)
Bear Creek (Stockton) 77, Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove) 50

The host Bruins (20-4) didn’t have a very good MLK weekend when they lost out-of-section games to top teams Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) and St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda). But they’ve bounced back and followed up their big win from Saturday over Folsom with another win on Monday over a Cosumnes Oaks team that has not lost in the Delta League this season. Continuing to make a claim that they should be considered the No. 1 team in the SJS (an almost blasphemous claim considering they’re from the same city as statewide power St. Mary’s), Bear Creek still has not lost to another team in the section (neither has St. Mary’s) and now has the win over Cosumnes Oaks to go with the one over Folsom. Head coach Anthony Matthews’ team is led by all-state candidate sophomore guard Mya Blake, who had 15 points vs. the Wolfpack. But in this game it was 3-point shooting by both Sarah Ruiz (15 points) and Andraya Perez (14 points) that was equally important. Deyliana Lewis added 11 points. Five-foot-eight senior Jasmine Hess led Cosumnes Oaks (19-6) with 13 points while junior Kailani Fox chipped in with 10.
