Bosco stays close enough to Mater Dei and has enough big games coming up to remain No. 2 in the state behind No. 1 Monarchs. JSerra, meanwhile, has to go up to No. 6 from No. 10 heading into this week’s game against Mater Dei. We also have two new teams that have been added to the top half of our state rankings: Murrieta Valley and Oakdale.

(After games of Saturday, Oct. 14)

1. (1) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 7-0
After showing their offensive firepower in the first half, it was the Monarchs’ defense that came up with the biggest plays in the second half of their 31-21 win last Friday over No. 2 St. John Bosco. The Braves were very much still in it late in the fourth quarter and had gotten to the Mater Dei 5-yard line with an attempt to score and then get the ball back on an onside kick. A sack by Solomon Tuliapupu (he had 2.5 sacks in the game) then pushed back the Braves, who then had a field attempt blocked. The Monarchs then just ran out the clock. Amon-Ra St. Brown and JT Daniels, the team’s two biggest stars, both had huge outings. St. Brown caught eight passes for 206 yards and two TDs plus he returned a punt 51 yards. Daniels passed for 321 yards and two TDs and rushed for 111 yards. All of many Mater Dei starters who were on the team last year are fully aware that they won the first game over Bosco last year only to fall short in the more important rematch in the CIF Southern Section Division I final. The Monarchs also have another solid opponent coming right up this week with a Friday matchup vs unbeaten and new No. 6 JSerra of San Juan Capistrano.
