Of course it will be No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 St. John Bosco playing on Friday night in Torrance. There also are no other rankings changes until No. 8 where Chaminade moves up even though it didn’t play. Upland also rises to No. 12 from No. 19 after topping Rancho Cucamonga while Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita barely drop after losing to the big two.

(Last week’s ranking in parentheses)
(After games of Saturday, Oct. 7)
1. (1) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 6-0
With a 42-point explosion in the second quarter, the Monarchs began their quest to go 5-0 in the Trinity League with a 70-35 win against previous No. 13 Santa Margarita. Junior QB JT Daniels completed 21 of 24 passes for 326 yards and six TDs and had the most success going to C.J. Parks and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Parks had six catches for 131 yards and two TDs and had a 67-yard punt return. St. Brown had five receptions for 100 yards and also two scores. The only negative was giving up some big passing plays to the Eagles on defense. Head coach Bruce Rollinson probably can look for similar approaches to his defense when the Monarchs play No. 2 St. John Bosco on Friday at El Camino College. The two teams split last year with MD winning in the regular season and Bosco winning in the CIF Southern Section D1 final. So far, comparative scores involving Bosco, St. John’s of Washington DC, De La Salle and Bishop Gorman would indicate Mater Dei might be a two-touchdown favorite.
