Football: Preseason Top Five

Sure, both De La Salle of Concord and Corona Centennial lost a lot of starters from last season, but head coach Justin Alumbaugh of the Spartans and head coach Matt Logan of the Huskies didn't go anywhere. They and their staffs are among the very best in the nation. Photos: Phillip Walton/SportStars & Mark Tennis.

We usually release all of our preseason overall state football rankings as part of a top 40 or even top 50 package. We’re doing something similar again in August, but this year have decided it’s pointless to wait around to announce the top five. We’ll also get these five going on our ticker and besides, based on how we do rankings, there’s no surprise regarding these five teams anyway. Of course, it’s De La Salle, Centennial and St. John Bosco at 1-2-3.

NOTE: This is a Gold Club post on CalHiSports.com. We will have a continued mix of free and Gold Club posts through the summer highlighting the best of California prep football heading into the 2016 season. To get your Gold Club membership, CLICK HERE.

(All five teams listed with last year’s record)

1. DE LA SALLE (CONCORD) 12-1

There are more question marks coming into a season than any we can remember in our many years of following the Spartans, but the coaching staff didn’t go anywhere so there’s definitely no reason why they shouldn’t be No. 1 in California until they lose.
