Football Team of the Week
Calaveras (San Andreas)
You’ve got to hand it to the Redskins, head coach Jason Weatherby and his staff. In the midst of the state likely about to pass legislation banning their nickname and of course a huge wildfire that impacted their community greatly, they’ve turned it around after a season-opening loss to McNair and then a closer loss to Escalon. Calaveras won last week 28-21 over a Union Mine of El Dorado school that was coming in off of a 40-20 win vs. Casa Roble of Orangevale and also had lost in a fairly close game to D4 state-ranked Bear River. Anthony Giangregorio led the way with 28 carries for 151 yards and one score. Calaveras hosts its Highway 49 rival Bret Harte on Friday in what should be an emotional gathering. Bret Harte students and staff also were hit hard by the Butte Fire.
