All-star games in California have had mild success over the years and Prep2Prep is teaming up with Northern California based scout Gerry Freitas to take another stab at it.
The Prep2Prep California All-Star Classic, to be held at Las Positas College in Livermore August 30, will be the state’s first all-star game since 1990. That year in June, the Fabulous 44 All-Star game took place at UC Irvine and featured many of the state’s top graduating seniors such as Mr. Basketball Ed O’Bannon of Lakewood Artesia. There have been various all-star games around the state since, including the Dada All-Star Classic from 1997 to 2000, but those events focused on graduating seniors instead of underclassmen, included national level players from outside the state, or were more local in scope.
The Prep2Prep California All-Star Classic will include two games pitting the top underclass players from Northern California against their Southern California counterparts. The first game, scheduled for a 1:30 PM PT tipoff, features players from the 2017 graduating class. It will be followed by a matchup of the NorCal vs. SoCal 2016 graduating classes at 3:30 PM PT.
Cal-Hi Sports State Junior of the Year Lonzo Ball of Chino Hills and Division II State Player of the Year T.J. Leaf of Foothills Christian of El Cajon headline the 2016 South unit. Ball is committed to UCLA while Leaf is bound for Arizona. The 2016 North unit includes forward Oscar Frayer of Moreau Catholic of Hayward. He’s committed to CAL.
The other players scheduled to compete in the event already committed to college include Cathedral of Los Angeles guard Milan Acquaah (Washington State), forward LiAngelo Ball of Chino Hills (UCLA) and the Corona Centennial duo of center Ike Anigbogu and power forward Jalen Hill. The Centennial duo is committed to UCLA.
The Prep2Prep California All-Star Classic selection committee includes Freitas, Frank Burlison of BurlisonOnBasketball.com, Joel Francisco of ESPN.com and Ronnie Flores of Cal-Hi Sports.
Complete rosters are scheduled to be announced August 1. For ticket and event information and updates, visit prep2prep.com/allstarclassic/2015.
