Power forward-center Ivan Rabb of Oakland Bishop O’Dowd is chosen for the 2015 McDonald’s All-American boys team.
Just as eventual 2014 Mr. Basketball Stanley Johnson of Santa Ana Mater Dei wasn’t a surprise with what he accomplished last season, there is little suspense when it comes to honors earned in 2014-15 by Ivan Rabb, this year’s Mr. Basketball front-runner. the Oakland Bishop O’Dowd standout was selected to the 2015 McDonald’s All-American boys team in an announcment today.
The 38th annual boys game will take place on April 1 (9 p.m. ET on ESPN) at the United Center in Chicago. The 14th girls game will also take place on April 1 (6:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU).
Rabb is the top player for an O’Dowd team that is currently ranked No. 5 in the Grassroots Hoops FAB 50. Rabb was at one point ranked as the No. 1 player in the 2015 ESPN 100, and even though we don’t think he’s the best prospect in the country, he’s long been a consensus top 10 national prospect in his class.
O’Dowd has played a national schedule and Rabb has been impressive in the big games — including a 28-point, 20-rebound performance in a victory over Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) and a 24-point, 12-rebound, five-block performance in a 79-70 victory over fellow McDonald’s All-American Jaylen Brown and his team at Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) in a nationally-televised game. At the time they played O’Dowd, both teams were ranked No. 4 in the FAB 50.
Rabb is now getting some serious consideration for the Mr. Basketball USA national player of the year awarded by our sister site — GrassrootsHoops.net. In the latest voting results, Rabb is tied for third with guard Malik Newman (Callaway, Jackson, Miss.) for third behind Brown and top vote-getter Ben Simmons (Montverde Academy, Montverde, Fla.), all McDonald’s selections.
Bishop O’Dowd will travel to SoCal next weekend to play FAB 50 No. 3 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) in the featured game of the 2015 Nike Extravaganza.
