Just like we did during the football season, we are going to do our best to spread around these honors as much as possible with one boy and one girl chosen from each region. This week’s best are from Elk Grove, Ridgecrest, Redding and Westlake Village.

Note: For purposes of this feature, we are considering the CIF Central Section to be in the north.
Marquese Chriss 200
Cal-Hi Sports Northern California
Boys Basketball Player of the Week

Marquese Chriss (Pleasant Grove, Elk Grove) Sr.

Putting on a show in last Saturday’s Father Barry Tribute at Jesuit of Carmichael, Chriss had several big-time dunks en route to pouring in 36 points with 14 rebounds and six blocks as the Eagles defeated Berkeley 59-56.

This 6-foot-8 power forward is considered to be one of the top senior recruits in the state and he has signed to go play next season at Washington. He was a member of our Cal-Hi Sports All-State Junior Team as a first unit selection last year and played a key role as a sophomore when Pleasant Grove won the CIF Division I state title.

Boys Basketball Player of the Week

Michael Polman (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) Sr.

A four-year varsity player for the Burros, Polman has been piling up the points even in low-scoring games. In last week’s 53-52 triumph over Lancaster, for example, Polman scored 24 of his team’s 30 first-half points and finished with 39. He also had six rebounds and three assists.

Player of the Week 120In a 64-50 victory against Palmdale later last week, the 5-foot-11 point guard had another strong outing with 29 points, seven assists and five steals.

As his senior season is coming to a close, Polman has received recruiting interest from Eastern Washington, Southern Utah and San Francisco State.

Cal-Hi Sports Northern California
Girls Basketball Player of the Week

Kamira Sanders (Enterprise, Redding) Jr.

Someone we have had our eyes on since she was a freshman is this junior guard from the CIF Northern Section. The time was right to pick her this week after big back-to-back games last week in a pair of wins.

Not just a scorer, Sanders had 26 points to go with eight steals, seven assists and six rebounds during a 65-36 win over Las Plumas of Oroville. One day later, she scored 35 points and had 11 steals during a 75-41 win over Del Norte of Crescent City.

Sanders is averaging 24.5 points and eight steals per game, including back-to-back outings o 42 and 44 points to start the season.

Over the last two seasons, she has led the Hornets to two section titles while twice being named Northern Section and Redding Record Searchlight MVP.
Katie Campbell 200
Cal-Hi Sports Southern California
Girls Basketball Player of the Week

Katie Campbell (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village) Sr.

Looking like she was competing in a 3-point shootout, Campbell hit for a school-record 10 3-pointers and finished with 36 points to lead the Lions past Newbury Park 86-54 in Marmonte League play.

In getting her 10 3-pointers, Campbell only took 13 shots and broke the previous school record of nine set in 2010 by Meghan McIntyre.

It also was a statement win for the Lions, who made their league debut by handing the two-time defending champions their first league loss since 2012.

Later in the week, Campbell had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead Oaks Christian past Serra of Gardena 54-46. It was the Lions’ first ever win against the Cavaliers and kept them at No. 9 overall in this week’s State Top 20.
