Le Boulanger South Bay/Peninsula
Offensive Player of the Week
Marcus Romero (Piedmont Hills, San Jose) Jr.
A player who’s been among those considered several times for this honor, on this occasion Marcus is the man.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound quarterback shined by completing 20 of 35 passes for 306 yards and five touchdowns in a zany 59-55 triumph over Willow Glen.
Romero, who also rushed for 38 yards against the Rams, also improved his season totals to 2,334 yards with 25 TD passes.
Piedmont Hills (6-4) opens the CIF Central Coast Section Division I playoffs against Fremont of Sunnyvale (9-1), which has had two South Bay/Peninsula players of the week this season – Phillip Tran on offense and Alejandro Morales on defense.
Le Boulanger South Bay/Peninsula
Defensive Player of the Week
Joey Medeiros (Saratoga) Sr.
In a 41-33 victory over Palo Alto that clinched a CCS playoff berth for the Falcons, Medeiros was all over the field knocking down passes or intercepting them.
Medeiros, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior, denied the Vikings with two interceptions and according to sportswriter Dick Sparrer of the San Jose Mercury-News he also deflected five other passes, three of which were in the end zone.
Medeiros also contributed on offense. He caught seven passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns and he scored himself on a 3-yard run.
Saratoga (5-5) plays No. 1 seed Pioneer of San Jose (8-2) in this week’s first-round of the CCS Division III playoffs.
Le Boulanger South Bay/Peninsula
Special Teams Player of the Week
John Rak (Homestead, Cupertino) Sr.
One of the most productive kickers in the CCS all season, this week is unfortunately our last chance to choose Rak since Homestead (7-3) was left out of the CCS playoffs even though the Mustangs impressed last week in a 58-24 win over previously undefeated Fremont of Sunnyvale.
Rak, a 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, helped the Mustangs’ cause against the Firebirds by converting 7-of-7 on PATs, making a 27-yard field goal and knocking 8 of 10 kickoffs for touchbacks.
For the season, Rak finished 37 of 37 on PATs with five field goals, including a longest of 40 yards.
