Charlie Powell, one of the all-time great athletes in California prep history, passsed away at age 82 on Labor Day.
Powell is only athlete to earn 12 varsiyt letters in three years at San Diego High, was the Southern California CIF player of the year in 1950, despite playing only 6 1/2 games, held the school shot put record (57-9 1/2) for 31 years, and starred in basketball and baseball.
Powell played one season of pro baseball as a St. Louis Browns farmhand in 1951, then jumped to the NFL at age 20, later turned to boxing and rose as high as No. 4 in heavyweight rankings.
From a great athletic family that included Art Powell, Ellsworth Powell, and Jerry Powell, all of whom earned similar fame and honors.
Thanks for passing this along, Rick. No doubt about Charlie’s place in history.
