Three of the top five teams took losses last week with some being among themselves. After a win over Redwood, up-and-down Presentation, a team with some good wins but some stinker losses, made a case for coming back in as the lone newcomer. However, while the Panthers didn’t get the nod, the CIF Central Coast Section still picked up a spot with Palo Alto getting the spot vacated by Maria Carrillo. We provide these rankings as part of a promotion with the Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area TV show.
Note: This week’s rankings do not include Tuesday match played this week between Archbishop Mitty and Valley Christian. Also, for this week’s new State Top 20 in girls volleyball, CLICK HERE.
1. (1) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 22-2
This weekend is the final tournament of the season when Mitty plays in the Stockton Classic and could face unbeaten Granite Bay.
2. (3) Valley Christian (San Jose) 21-5
The two losses at the ASICS California Challenge don’t hurt the Warriors at all in the Bay Area rankings, and an earlier win over Sacred Heart Cathedral moves them up.
3. (5) Redwood (Larkspur) 28-2
The Giants went 7-1 since the last rankings. They took a 2-0 loss to Presentation but they won the rest of their matches at the NorCal Classic, including a 2-0 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral.
4. (4) Menlo (Atherton) 17-4
The wins over Sacred Heart Cathedral and Valley Christian aren’t looking as good this week as they did last week.
5. (2) Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco) 19-5
The Irish are 5-3 since the last rankings but all their losses are to ranked teams.
6. (6) Branson (Ross) 13-6
Like two weeks ago in Marin County Athletic League action, the Bulls had a pair of 3-0 wins over San Rafael and San Marin.
7. (8) Campolindo (Moraga) 10-5
The Cougars only had one match and it was a 3-0 road win at Acalanes. They also are in the Stockton Classic this weekend.
8. (9) Monte Vista (Danville) 23-3
The top team in the Contra Costa Times’ rankings was pretty busy last week, going 2-0 in league matches and then blitzing the field at the Dougherty Valley tourney.
9. (7) St. Francis (Mountain View) 12-7
The Lancers had two losses last week at the California Challenge to so-so CIF San Diego Section teams, San Diego Del Norte and Poway. The losses show the power and depth this year in San Diego is better than the Bay Area.
10. (NR) Palo Alto 14-4
It would be easy to give this spot to Presentation based on a split with Menlo and last week’s win over Redwood, but while the Panthers have posted some upsets, the team is up and down, with 11 losses. One of those is to the Vikings.
Dropped out: Previous No. 10 Maria Carrillo (Santa Rosa) 19-6 – they took three losses at the Folsom tournament.
