No. 1 Team Result: Narbonne defeated Banning (Wilmington) 54-7.
Race for No. 1: Yes, as explained in this week’s State Top 25, Narbonne has a slightly better case at this point of the season to be in front of Vista Murrieta. The aftermath of Mater Dei’s 24-7 win over previous No. 1 Santa Margarita does not, however, alter the still very real possibility that whichever team wins the CIFSS Pac-Five title is going to get one of the two Open Division South bowl berths. The precedent for that was set last year when Santa Margarita (with two losses) was chosen for the D1 bowl game instead of Vista Murrieta even though the CIF insists that Vista Murrieta’s forfeit losses had nothing to do with it. If Mission Viejo, El Toro or potentially St. John Bosco (also ironically with forfeit losses) win the Pac-Five with no losses on the field, that makes that champion’s selection to the Open Division that much more likely. So for now, Narbonne is on top and Vista Murrieta is No. 2. At the conclusion of the section playoffs, it still could be one of those two teams vs. the Pac-Five champ with the other team going to the D1 SoCal bowl game to play either the San Diego or Central Section champ.

Race for No. 1: We had to do some shuffling among the top five in this division to match what was done earlier in the week for the State Top 25. That involved moving up both Edison of Huntington Beach and Chaminade with Hart sliding down to No. 5. Although we have Oceanside in the No. 1 slot, the team that looks like it would be most likely to earn a SoCal bowl berth in this division is the one that ends up as champion of the CIFSS Western Division. That’s the divisional playoff bracket that will include No. 2 Lompoc, No. 4 Chaminade and No. 7 Gardena Serra. Edison’s chances also are going to continue to improve as long as the Chargers keep winning and Mater Dei does the same in the Pac-Five. If, for example, at the end of the playoffs, Edison can point to its only loss being by six points to a Mater Dei team that just won the Pac-Five title then it might even be harder to deny the Chargers than the Western Division winner.

Race for No. 1: For the second straight week, there was no movement in the top 10 in this division. A team to watch for next week is St. Augustine because the Saints are playing D2 South-ranked Cathedral Catholic this week in one of the best rivalry games in Southern California. If St. Augustine wins, that would clearly be enough for the team to get a boost of at least one and perhaps two positions next week no matter what other teams do. The Saints, who have lost only to D1 Otay Ranch and by just two points, won last week 41-7 against Mira Mesa of San Diego.

Race for No. 1: We’re in a little bit of a holding pattern for this group until next week when No. 2 Bishop Diego plays host to D3 South No. 2 Nordhoff of Ojai to decide the Tri-Valley League title. Then the next week, on Nov. 2, No. 1 Sierra Canyon plays D3 South No. 1 Paraclete while Bishop Diego will come back to play No. 3 Mission Prep. The only change in this week’s rankings was to move up San Diego Horizon after it knocked off previous No. 8 La Jolla Country Day 44-34. One of Horizon’s two losses was to Santa Fe Christian so it was easy to slot the Panthers right behind the Eagles with La Jolla Country Day next because it has a win over No. 10 Francis Parker.
