John Abalos (Highlands, North Highlands)
Filling up the stat sheet, Abalos not only carried the ball 18 times for 254 yards and three touchdowns but he also had two touchdown passes, caught two passes and had six tackles on defense in a 49-6 win over San Juan of Fair Oaks.
Ivy Adair (Rancho Bernardo, San Diego)
After starting the season 0-5, the Broncos opened up Palomar League play with a win as he carried the ball 27 times for 282 yards and a touchdown in a 31-28 win over Ramona.
Alex Alvarez (South East, South Gate)
As the go-to target for the Jaguars in the passing game, he caught 13 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-34 win over Roosevelt of Los Angeles.
Jake Brito (Cypress)
Handed the ball 36 times, he rushed for 257 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Centurions defeated Kennedy of La Palma 28-7 in Empire League action.
Wayne Brooks (Stagg, Stockton)
A junior quarterback with multiple talents, Brooks has led Stagg to a 6-0 start to its season. In a 41-0 triumph last week against Edison of Stockton, he passed for 276 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 50 yards with two more scores. Brooks and his teammates could be 8-0 when they face perennial power St. Mary’s on Oct. 26.
Andrew Brown (Ripon Christian)
The Modesto Bee’s Player of the Week scored all of the Knights’ points when they beat Turlock Christian 42-6. In addition to scoring six touchdowns (four rushing, two on receptions), the junior standout also went 6-for-6 on PATs. He rushed 15 times for 105 yards and caught five passes for 86.
Jake Browning & Troy Knox (Folsom)
With Cal-Hi Sports in attendance, Browning completed 37 of his 48 pass attempts for 353 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-21 victory against previously unbeaten Oak Ridge of El Dorado Hills. Knox caught 13 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs improved their state ranking to No. 19 overall.
Sage Burmeister (La Jolla Country Day)
Handoff to Burmeister was a common saying during the Torreys’ 27-6 win over Parker of San Diego. The grid-hoop standout carried the ball 38 times for 362 yards and three touchdowns.
John Cefalu (South Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe)
In a game against Elko of Nevada, he completed 26 of his 46 pass attempts for 443 yards and four scores in a 41-36 win for the Vikings. South Tahoe is a member of the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association, but we will include totals from its athletes and teams in the California record book.
Nathan Chunn (Escalon)
Big Nate chugged along for 211 more rushing yards on 23 carries and scored five times to lead the Cougars past Orestimba of Newman 56-28. One of the TDs came on a reception with the other four on Chunn runs.
Anthony Cota (Sierra, Manteca)
After scoring seven times in a game earlier this season, getting five must have seemed like no big deal for Cota when the Timberwolves topped Manteca 35-26. Cota also ended with 22 carries for 228 yards.
Michael Crean (St. Helena)
Lower Lake ended Crean’s season last year when he went down against the Trojans with a broken leg. The Saints won that game without him, but this year he led the defense with 14 tackles and a sack in a 47-0 shellacking. If that wasn’t bad enough for Lower Lake, its bus broke down causing an hour delay in starting the game.
Michael Darr (Santiago, Corona)
Another multi-sport standout (Darr’s other sport is baseball), he passed for 268 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 118 yards and two more scores to help the Sharks get past Norco 32-26 in a Big VIII League opener. Norco QB Coltin Gerhart also had more than 100 yards rushing and more than 100 passing.
T.J. Dove (River Valley, Yuba City)
Falcon fans had a lot of love for Dove after he rushed for two touchdowns and returned two punts for touchdowns to lead the team past Pioneer of Woodland 49-28.
Devon Dunn (Alemany, Mission Hills)
It was Dunn’s 4-yard scoring run with 45 seconds left that lifted the Warriors past Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks 49-42. It also capped a huge night for him as he went 25 of 35 passing for 282 yards and also carried 13 times for 122 yards rushing.
Kevin Flemer (St. Mary’s, Berkeley)
The Panthers’ quarterback threw for 376 yards and five TDs, and the team needed every bit of it, in a 35-28 victory over Dublin Valley Christian. Flemer also is one of the top baseball pitchers in Northern California.
Christian Garcia (Mesa Verde, Citrus Heights)
Despite Garcia returning a kickoff 85 yards for a score, catching a 59-yard touchdown pass and running for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, it wasn’t enough to prevent a 36-34 loss for the Mavericks against Marysville.
Jared Goff (Marin Catholic, Kentfield)
The temperature was almost 90 degrees but the Cal-bound signal caller hardly broke a sweat in passing for five TDs in less than three quarters of action in a 49-7 swamping of arch-rival and host Novato.
Samjie Grant (Colony, Ontario)
Since Mt. Baldy League play has started, the Titans have yet to lose a game behind Grant, an Arizona commit who carried the ball 12 times for 288 yards and four touchdowns in a 57-34 win over Don Lugo of Chino Hills.
Carson Guzman (Clovis North, Clovis)
He set a new school record for the unbeaten Broncos (now the No. 2 ranked team in the CIF Central Section) by rushing for 319 yards on 22 carries and scoring two touchdowns in a 53-29 win over Clovis West.
Jalen Harvey (El Cerrito)
The hard-hitting and speedy 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior wide receiver and linebacker continues to dominate for the 7-0 Gauchos. In a 59-6 drubbing of Walnut Creek Berean Christian, Harvey took a fumble to the house for a touchdown and recorded an interception on defense, and caught a 56-yard TD pass on offense, all in one half’s work.
Kyle Hawkins (Otay Ranch, Chula Vista)
Just a junior, he put on an impressive display for the unbeaten Mustangs in a 40-10 win over Bonita Vista of Chula Vista as he completed 14 of his 21 pass attempts for 351 yards and five touchdowns. Hawkins also rushed for 70 yards and two scores.
Tom Hays (Paradise)
Since a season-opening loss to Grant of Sacramento, the Bobcats have won five straight partly because of Hays. The senior quarterback rushed for 193 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while passing for 137 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-41 overtime win last week against Enterprise of Redding.
Jack Heneghan (Menlo, Atherton)
Having former Menlo, Stanford and NFL quarterback John Paye as a quarterback coach and mentor has worked well for the junior signal caller who has solid interest from Virginia, Duke and Vanderbilt. In a 43-12 victory over Woodside, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder was 16 of 23 for 295 yards and four TDs and rushed for 106 yards and a score. That’s 401 combined yards all in just over three quarters of work.
Josh Holden (Cloverdale)
In a 41-40 shootout victory over Kelseyville that got Cloverdale its first win of the season, Holden passed for 196 yards and three TDs and rushed for 112 yards and two more scores, including the game-winner with 1:51 remaining.
Josiah Johnson & Damian Wheeler (Sacramento)
Josiah’s arm was on fire as he completed 16 of his 21 pass attempts for 419 yards and six touchdowns for the Dragons in their 52-15 defeat of Sacramento Hiram Johnson. Damian was his leading receiver as he caught six passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns.
Chad Kanoff (Harvard-Westlake, North Hollywood)
Since a season-opening loss to Loyola, the Wolverines have now won five in a row behind Kanoff, who completed 19 of his 30 pass attempts for 389 yards and six touchdowns in a 44-11 win over St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs.
Jared Lebowitz (St. Francis, La Canada)
Called on to the throw the ball 52 times, Lebowitz completed 28 passes for 412 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-40 win over Cathedral of Los Angeles.
Craig Lee (Redlands)
The UCLA-bound senior rushed for 254 yards and six touchdowns on 14 carries as the Terriers won their fifth straight game by defeating Miller of Fontana 54-6.
Cade Lindsey (Glendora)
With one of the top rushing performances not only in the state but in the nation this past week, Lindsey carried the ball 27 times for 366 yards and four touchdowns in a 32-0 win over Alta Loma.
Jalon Luque (Rancho Cotate, Rohnert Park)
Luque carries the load in coach Ed Conroy’s mostly-running offense and the Cougars’ senior running back has played a big part in the team’s 6-0 start. Last week in a 34-0 shellacking of Santa Rosa Montgomery, Jalon ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Two weeks ago, he rushed for 205 yards and three scores in a 35-0 win over Ukiah.
Ulises Marrot (Gunderson, San Jose)
His first name is spelled a little different than the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, but this Ulises was certainly in charge in a 12-0 blanking of cross-town Branham. The senior defensive end had three sacks and a forced fumble.
D.J. Martin (Stockdale, Bakersfield)
In a 68-34 victory against Independence of Bakersfield, Martin rushed for a season-high of 385 yards, second best in school history, and also scored five touchdowns. Martin was the State Sophomore of the Year two seasons ago but had eligibility issues last season.
Brandon Martinez (El Monte)
Leading the Lions to a 38-21 win over Arroyo of El Monte in their Mission Valley League opener, Martinez continued to shine as he completed 27 of his 40 pass attempts for 386 yards and six touchdowns. Last week, Brandon was sensational with 573 yards in the air (one report had him at 544) against Bell Gardens and he now has more than 2,000 on the season.
Nick Matiasevich (Monte Vista Christian, Watsonville)
It’s not often a quarterback gets to score on both sides of the ball, but Matiasevich did just that in a 55-14 win over North Salinas, passing for 255 yards and two TDs, and retuning a fumble recovery 12 yards to pay dirt as a cornerback.
Marcus McMaryion (Dinuba)
The junior quarterback set a school record by passing for 501 yards in a 27-7 win over Central Valley Christian of Visalia. McMaryion, who completed 23 of 33 passes and had four touchdowns, ties Carlos Brown of Riverdale in the CIF Central Section record book. Brown, now known as Alan Autry (an actor and the former mayor of Fresno), passed for 501 yards in 1969. McMaryion’s top target was Aaron Taylor, who finished with nine catches for 210 yards and two scores.
Jeremiah Murrillo (Soledad)
He had to leave the game just before halftime with an injury and didn’t return, however by then he had rushed for 215 yards and three TDs and his team was leading 33-7 in what would eventually be a 40-23 win over Pacific Grove.
Gerry Myres (La Mirada)
He was nearly perfect passing the ball as he completed 20 of his 22 pass attempts for 219 yards and five touchdowns as the Matadores defeated Artesia of Lakewood 42-13. La Mirada improved to 6-1 and remained among the top 15 in this week’s CIF Division II South bowl game rankings.
Darin Newman & Ja’narrick James (Analy, Sebastopol)
These two came up huge in getting the Tigers to 7-0 in a 63-13 stomping of visiting Healdsburg. Quarterback Newman passed for five touchdowns. Ja’narrick had a knack for finding the end zone, returning a fumble for a TD and taking a kickoff 95 yards for a second score.
Joe Protheroe (Clayton Valley, Concord)
Of his six carries in a 69-22 thumping of crosstown Ygnacio Valley, the shortest gain was 12 yards on his first rush of the night, and he only carried six times, the last coming with 9:50 left in the third quarter. However, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back still managed to run for 267 yards and three touchdowns. His TD runs were 51, 95 and 76 yards. The CIF North Coast Section reported rushing leader now has 1,378 yards and 12 TDs and is averaging a whopping 16.81 yards per carry for the 5-1 Eagles.
Oscar Reyes (Tulare)
He’s had some huge passing outings in his career at Tulare, but had his best so far last week when the Redskins defeated Monache of Porterville 40-39. Reyes hit on 29 of 40 passes for 413 yards and three touchdowns to fuel a comeback win.
Daniel Robbins (Chico)
Completing 23 of his 32 pass attempts for 275 yards doesn’t sound that impressive until you mention that six of his completions were for touchdowns in a 48-25 win over Red Bluff. Earlier this season it has been confirmed that Robbins went 16 for 16 in his first outing, a total that puts his name into the state record book.
Joe Sanchez (El Rancho, Pico Rivera)
The Dons opened up Del Rio League play with a 42-23 loss to California of Whittier despite Sanchez passing for 406 yards and three touchdowns.
Isaiah Saunders (Pleasant Grove, Elk Grove)
The Sheldon of Sacramento defense had a hard time tackling Saunders once he was handed the ball as he ran for 268 yards and six touchdowns in a 55-20 win by the Eagles over in Delta River League action.
Brian Scott (Dana Hills, Dana Point)
Just a sophomore, Scott had only carried the ball four times all year but after an injury to starting running back Marcus Hughes in the second quarter he rushed for 216 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown in a 20-18 win over Aliso Niguel.
Keenan Smith (Fremont, Sunnyvale)
The junior running back set a school record with seven touchdowns, four rushing, two on special teams and one on defense, in a 46-21 Firebirds’ victory against Lynbrook of San Jose. After scoring his first touchdown on a 3-yard run, Smith had rushing TDs of 39, 86 and 56 yards. He also had two 85-yard kickoff returns for scores and returned a turnover 46 yards for a touchdown.
Jacob Taylor (Rim of the World, Lake Arrowhead)
Fighting his way once again for big yardage every time he touched the ball, the Fighting Scots remained undefeated with a 69-20 win over Notre Dame of Riverside as he rushed for 327 yards and six touchdowns on just 16 carries.
Robert Taylor (Castro Valley)
He scored five touchdowns in a 48-39 win over San Leandro, rushing only six times for scores on runs of 77, 40 and 38 yards, catching a 26-yard TD pass, and returning a kickoff 77 yards to pay dirt.
Jordan Vinson & Zach Suarez (Rio Americano, Sacramento)
Helping to make 72-year-old Max Miller a winner in his return to coaching, Jordan rushed for 288 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-6 win over Cordova of Rancho Cordova (a school Miller is even more known for coaching). Suarez shined on defense with three interceptions.
Jacob Whannel (Calipatria)
Nearly every pass seemed to be headed Whannel’s way as he caught 12 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-28 win by Calipatria over Mountain Empire of Pine Valley.
Brady White (Hart, Newhall)
One incomplete pass prevented White from setting a reported state record (according to our own Cal-Hi Sports record book) in the category of best perfect passing for a game. White still went 18 of 19 and gets his name into the book for completing 16 passes in a row in a 49-6 win over West Ranch of Valencia. He also finished with 221 passing yards with three TDs and a 25-yard TD run.
Kahlil Williams (Cristo Rey, Sacramento)
Scoring a touchdown in nearly every way possible, he rushed for two touchdowns, caught two touchdown passes, returned a kickoff for a score and returned a fumble for a touchdown for six scores in all to lead Cristo Rey past Valley Christian of Roseville 60-24.
Nick Wilson (Central, Fresno)
Helping the Grizzlies get ready for a big game this week against Clovis, Wilson ran for a personal high of 259 yards on 14 carries and scored on three long runs of 52, 57 and 62 yards in a 50-22 win over Buchanan of Clovis.
Drew Wolitarsky (Canyon, Canyon Country)
Congratulations to Drew for setting the new career state record for receiving yards during Canyon’s 49-7 victory last Friday against Golden Valley of Santa Clarita. Wolitarsky ended the game with nine catches for 149 yards and four TDs. He raised his career total to 4,505 yards, which surpassed the previous state best of 4,486 set in 2002 by Steve Smith when the NFL receiver was at Taft of Woodland Hills. According to our own exclusive Cal-Hi Sports record book, Wolitarsky can now focus in on the career record for receptions, which is currently at 271 by Steve Smith. Wolitarsky started this week with 240.
Nakita Zamora & Marco Zamora (Monte Vista, Danville)
Mustangs’ assistant coach Chris Babcock corrected us when we reported Nakita and Marco as brothers when in fact they aren’t related, except as quarterback and favorite wide receiver. Last week in a huge 44-26 win over undefeated California of San Ramon, Nakita, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior, passed for 312 yards and a touchdown. Marco, a junior, caught 14 of the passes for 205 yards.
