This will be the final set of these honors for the 2015-16 school year and three of them led their teams to section championships last weekend – from Eagle Rock, San Jose and Ceres. The other choice from Torrance still has games to play.
Note: For purposes of this feature, we also consider the CIF Central Section to be in the north.
To nominate a player for the upcoming all-state baseball and softball teams, email markjtennis@gmail.com and feel free to include a photo that we can use (which means it’s not from the local newspaper or from another web site).
It’s also a great time to sign up for our Gold Club to see all of our great content. The yearly rate has gone up, but you can now see all of our info, including state record book items for $9.99 covering three months. For details, CLICK HERE.
Cal-Hi Sports Southern California
Baseball Player of the Week
Jacob Alvarez
(Eagle Rock) Sr.
For the first time in school history, which dates to 1927, the Eagles captured a CIF L.A. City Section baseball championship and at the same time he may be the first player in school history to capture this honor from us at Cal-Hi Sports.
Helping the Eagles reach the championship game, Alvarez allowed just one hit to get the win in a 3-1 victory over Chavez of San Fernando and in the 10-6 win over Franklin of Los Angeles in the Division II championship game he had two hits and drove in three runs.
Jacob’s twin brother, Andrew, also had a good final game of the season as he pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts while also having two hits.
Cal-HI Sports Southern California
Softball Player of the Week
Alyssa Loza
(North, Torrance) Sr.
The Saxons advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division IV semifinals with a 4-0 win over San Marcos of Santa Barbara behind Loza, their Arizona State-bound ace.
Turning the defense behind her into more like spectators, Loza pitched a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts. Earlier in the week during a 1-0 win over Heritage Christian of Northridge, she took a perfect game into the seventh inning and finished with a one-hitter while striking out nine.
Earlier this season, Loza pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 win against Redondo Union of Redondo Beach while also hitting a home run for the game’s lone run against Kat Ung, who was also up for this honor this week.
Cal-Hi Sports Northern California
Baseball Player of the Week
Jake Dermer
(Leland, San Jose) Sr.
With the CIF Central Coast Section Division I championship on the line, Dermer did it all as he pitched and hit to lead the Chargers past Leigh of San Jose 8-2.
Pitching a complete game, he allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out two and not allowing an earned run to finish the season 9-2 with a 0.90 ERA.
Dermer also broke the game open in the fourth inning with a three-run triple, which helped him finish with three hits during the game.
Leland scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed on its way to the team’s second title in the last three years.
Cal-Hi Sports Northern California
Softball Player of the Week
Nicole Bates
(Ceres) Sr.
While she’ll make the Cal-Hi Sports state record book in several career categories, such as hits (205), runs (171), doubles (31) and triples (22), what Bates did last week, which was lead the Bulldogs to their first CIF Sac-Joaquin Section title in 21 years, was more important.
During the postseason alone, Bates went 15-for-24 with three homers, four doubles and one triple. In the team’s 5-3 win over Oakdale (a team the Bulldogs lost to twice earlier in the season), Bates hit two homers and had four RBI. She then went 3-for-4 in a win against Benicia, 3-for-4 in a loss against Benicia and then in the title decider against Benicia she went 3-for-4 once again.

My husband and i were quite fulfilled Emmanuel could complete

been trying to sell. We really take into account we’ve got the blog owner to thank
for that. All the illustrations you have made, the straightforward website menu, the relationships your site give support to
create – it is mostly impressive, and it is helping our son and
