Week 9 Top 25 Scoreboard

If teams on Friday night believed they could do something special, many did just that, including Santa Margarita, Franklin of Elk Grove and Valley Christian of San Jose.

If teams on Friday night believed they could do something special, many did just that, including Santa Margarita, Franklin of Elk Grove and Valley Christian of San Jose.

It’s the most upsets for one night so far this season with No. 5 Mater Dei being the biggest ship to get sunk in the south. Up north, it was No. 11 Elk Grove. The San Diego Section, meanwhile, is going to get jumbled again.

1. De La Salle (Concord) 8-0
Defeated Amador Valley (Pleasanton) 63-14. That’s 34 in a row for the Spartans, who are now on the all-time state win streak list for the fourth time – 151, 44, 34 and now 34 and counting. When will this one end?

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 8-0
Defeated JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) 48-7. Next up for the Braves is Mater Dei, but Monarchs won’t be unbeaten and they won’t be top five anymore in the state when it happens.

3. Folsom 8-0
Defeated Sheldon (Sacramento) 80-27. Sheldon actually led 7-0. Whenever you see a score like that from this team, thoughts of a QB with 10 or 11 TD passes are quick to arise. Jake Browning had five throwing and one rushing.

4. Serra (Gardena) 8-0
Defeated Cathedral (Los Angeles) 45-14. Adoree’ Jackson scored on 105-yd interception return. One of our Student Sports football colleagues saw him in person in real game for first time last week, then voted for him as No. 1 on weekly USA Mr. Football ballot. Serra hosts unbeaten St. Francis of La Canada next week.

5. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 7-1
LOST to Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 16-7. Tough night for Monarchs as standout RB Justin Allen was reportedly on crutches after suffering an injury.

6. Mission Viejo 8-0
Defeated Tesoro (Los Flores) 37-7. Rolling through the South Coast League isn’t quite like the Trinity League, but Diablos should move up to No. 1 in Orange County.

7. Serra (San Mateo) 6-1
Defeated St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 31-24 on Saturday. The Padres hung on despite giving up 170 yards rushing to SI’s Elijah Dale.

8. Servite (Anaheim) 5-3
Defeated Orange Lutheran (Orange) 20-19. Travis Waller threw 40-yard Hail Mary TD pass on final play to big-time junior Equanimeous St. Brown.

9. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 7-1
Did not play. Will finish the regular season with road games against Millikan of Long Beach and Wilson of Long Beach.

10. Hart (Newhall) 8-0
Defeated Saugus 38-3. The Indians’ last two regular season games are against Valencia and Canyon. Canyon just beat Valencia 38-28 so that one could be for Foothill League title.

11. Elk Grove 7-1
LOST to Franklin (Elk Grove) 28-21. This will probably make it a three-way tie for the Delta Valley Conference title. Grant has win over Franklin and Elk Grove has win over Grant.

12. Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 8-0
Defeated Jesuit (Carmichael) 28-23 on Saturday. Jesuit just lost 56-14 to Folsom so the closeness of this score is not a good sign for anyone looking for Folsom having to face an opponent that can stay close to the end.

13. Rancho Cucamonga 8-0
Defeated Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga) 20-16. Gage Pucci came on in the second half in return to QB role and keyed come-from-behind win.

14. Chaminade (West Hills) 6-2
Defeated St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs) 64-13. Solid bouncback win for Eagles after loss to No. 4 Serra.

15. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 7-1
Defeated Calabasas 56-7. Lions were coming in off of bye week and showed no rust.

16. Bellarmine (San Jose) 5-2
LOST to Valley Christian (San Jose) 31-13. Looks like SJ Merc-News was correct when it dropped Bells behind Mitty in its rankings.

17. San Pasqual (Escondido) 7-1
LOST to Rancho Buena Vista (Vista) 38-36. One week after OT win over Mission Hills, the Eagles fall back to earth and throw the San Diego Section pecking order into disarray.

18. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 7-1
Defeated Fallbrook 36-6. Despite win, the Grizzlies will probably have to drop in the next rankings because the team they lost to just got beat.

19. Centennial (Corona) 6-2
Defeated Roosevelt (Eastvale) 48-0. The Huskies shut out a team that was averaging nearly 40 points per game.

20. Edison (Fresno) 8-0
Defeated Madera 42-6. The Tigers’ hopes for a CIF D1 South bowl bid improved with results from San Diego. If they finish unbeaten, there’s now almost for sure going to be no unbeaten team from San Diego on the selection board with them.

21. Eastlake (Chula Vista) 7-1
Defeated Bonita Vista (Chula Vista) 27-0. It will be interesting to see how much support the Titans get to be new No. 1 in San Diego Section due to San Pasqual’s loss to Rancho Buena Vista. Only loss to AZ power and has win over St. Augustine (which just beat Cathedral).

22. Bakersfield 6-2
Defeated Frontier (Bakersfield) 42-21. The Drillers are a two-point conversion away from being in the top 15.

23. Edison (Huntington Beach) 5-3
LOST to Los Alamitos 16-10. Combined with Fountain Valley also losing, there are four teams in the Sunset League tied at 2-1.

24. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 7-0
Defeated St. Francis (Mountain View) 13-12. The Monarchs blocked a field goal in the closing seconds that would have won the game for St. Francis.

25. Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 4-4
Defeated West Adams Prep (Los Angeles) 62-0. The Cougars still look to us like a No. 1 seed for the L.A. City Section Division I playoffs.

No doubt that CDM should be ranked in front of any and all Sunset League teams at this point. But even with the number of losses, I’d still go with Santa Margarita and OLu higher.
